2019-20 UEFA Champions League Group Stage Primer: All of the Permutations

Posted By High Press 10 on December 10, 2019

We’ve covered most of these Champions League group permutations in different articles, but let’s get them all under one roof.

Group stage play ends this week. Some groups are decided. Some are all but decided. And others have a wide range of possibilities.

On our Champions League podcast yesterday, we compared the final matchday to Selection Sunday during March Madness. There are so many games going on with so much at stake.

Enjoy the sweat.

Group A

Who goes through?

  • PSG won the group.
  • Real Madrid will finish second.

Group B

Who goes through?

  • Bayern Munich won the group.
  • Tottenham will finish second.

Group C

Who goes through?

  • Manchester City won the group. Then it gets tricky…
  • Shakhtar Donetsk (currently in second) go through if they beat Atalanta at home. They also go through with a draw unless Dinamo Zagreb beat City’s likely B-team. City’s B-team though isn’t your average B-team.
  • Atalanta are currently in fourth. However, a win at Shakhtar sends them through unless Dinamo Zagreb beat City.
  • Dinamo Zagreb are in third but arguably have the toughest task ahead of them. They must beat Manchester City and Shakhtar must lose to Atalanta.

Group D

Who goes through?

  • Juventus have won the group.
  • Atletico Madrid go through in second barring a mega-collapse. They just need to win at home against Lokomotiv Moscow. A Bayer Leverkusen loss to  Juventus’ likely B-team sends them through as well.
  • Bayer Leverkusen can still advance but need to beat the Juve B-team and have Atleti lose.

Group E

Who goes through?

Oh boy.

  • Liverpool go through atop the group with a win away at RBS. A draw also sends them through though likely in second. An unlikely Napoli home loss to Genk also sends them through. Aaaaaand if Napoli win but Liverpool only lose by a one goal margin of a 5-4 or higher score at RBS (unlikely).
  • Napoli are a little less complicated. They just need to win or draw Genk at home to advance. Red Bull Salzburg losing also sends them through.
  • Red Bull Salzburg can advance if they defeat Liverpool unless it’s by a one-goal margin of 5-4 or higher and Napoli beat Genk. If Napoli draw Genk and RBS beat Liverpool, RBS and Napoli advance.

Group F

Who goes through?

  • Barcelona will finish atop the group.
  • Inter Milan will face a Barca squad sans Messi, which should make their task easier. They advance by matching whatever Borussia Dortmund’s result is. If both squads win, they’re in. If both squads lose, they’re in.
  • Borussia Dortmund advance if they defeat Slavia Prague and Inter draws or loses.

Group G

Who goes through?

  • RB Leipzig are in but need a draw or win to guarantee the top spot.
  • Zenit St. Petersburg are in if they beat or draw Benfica away and Lyon do not win against Leipzig. They can also advance if Lyon lose.
  • Lyon are definitely in with a win. They can advance with a draw if Zenit lose. But it can still get complicated. If Zenit and Lyon win today, Lyon will actually finish first and Leipzig in second.

Group H

Who goes through?

  • Ajax have the simplest equation. A win or draw at home to Valencia and they’re through. They also advance if Chelsea lose.
  • Chelsea (currently in third) must win at home vs Lille. They can advance with a draw as well if Valencia lose.
  • Valencia  (currently in second) have to defeat Ajax to advance. A draw does it too with a Chelsea loss.
