2020-21 Bundesliga Team Of The Season So Far

Posted By Alex Blowers on January 26, 2021

We are just past the halfway point of the season with 18 games played. Some of the league’s biggest players are proving once again why they are the best. The Bundesliga really is the best for young talent, with new stars emerging as well. I’m going for a classic 4-4-2 for my 2020-21 Bundesliga Team of the Season so far.

Peter Gulácsi has the best stats for the 2 that matter most for goalkeepers. The former Liverpool player has 8 clean sheets & only conceded 17, which works out to 0.9 goals a game. He hasn’t been the busiest, making an average of just 1.6 saves per game.

The Hungarian international has a release clause in his contract that activates in the summer. His agent Hasan Cetinkaya told Bild the buy-out fee “it’s very low, even in corona times.” The 30-year-old goalkeeper has made 203 appearances for RB Leipzig since his move from Red Bull Salzburg in 2015.

This is Angelińo’s breakout season. The Manchester City loanee has picked up 7 clean sheets, 4 goals & 2 assists in 17 appearances. He has been a constant attacking threat recording the 3rd most crosses from open play with 63.

Julian Nagelsmann’s system requires a high work rate from the WB’s to provide width & Angelińo gives him that in abundance with 186.1 km’s covered so far.

Dayot Upamecano is probably Europe’s brightest CB talent. He’s an aggressive defender who is blessed with phenomenal pace & top quality passing ability.

He’s the league’s 6th best for pass completion with 91%, averages 6.6 completed long balls per game & is the 6th fastest player after clocking a speed of 35.39 km/h. He has 7 clean sheets under his belt & I’m certain he will move on this summer to one of Europe’s elite clubs.

Marvin Friedrich has played every minute of the season for FC Union Berlin & been in brilliant form at both ends of the pitch. He’s the highest-scoring defender with 4 goals & people are canvassing Joachim Löw to call him up for the German national side.

He’s not getting carried away with his success this season & keeping himself firmly grounded. In a recent interview with kicker, he told them “Our goal for the season remains avoiding relegation,” & “I want to keep developing steadily and to help the team.”

Baku has featured in all 18 Matchdays after Wolfsburg signed him from Mainz 05 on the last day of the summer transfer window for $11 million.

He’s one of the hardest workers in the league, completing the 2nd most sprints with 530 & the 3rd most intensive runs with 1480. The 22-year-old contributed 3 goals & 1 assist, including the winner against Bayer Leverkusen that has taken Wolfsburg into the Top 4.

Gio Reyna is the USMNT’s best player of this golden generation. He has produced several magical moments already in his career & he’s only just turned 18. The ‘American Dream’ has 3 goals & 4 assists in 17 appearances, which isn’t the best record. But, he’s still working out his playing style & developing physically. He’s a joy to watch & one of my favorite players in the league.

Leverkusen’s latest Wunderkid is already impacting the big games at the age of 17. He scored the winner against Borussia Dortmund recently & has 3 goals & 4 assists in 15 appearances. His form is even more impressive when you consider that he’s still at school & studying for exams.

Florian Wirtz will eventually move on just like Kai Havertz, but I think he’ll stick around till the summer of 2023, at least.

Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Captain has led by example & been in brilliant form this season, contributing 9 goals & 4 assists in 18 appearances. His best performance came against Eintracht Frankfurt back in the middle of December. 3-1 down, he kept his cool to convert a penalty in the 90th minute & scored the equalizer in the 95th to complete his hat-trick.

Silas Wamangituka has been this season’s break out star & will be crowned Rookie of the Season in May. He’s already picked up the monthly award in November & December. Capable of playing any position on the right, he has scored 10 goals & provided 3 assists in 17 games.

Pace is his biggest asset & he is this season’s 5th fastest player clocking a speed of 35.42 km/h. The 21-year-old is also a hard worker with the 4th highest amount of sprints at 504. Europe’s elite clubs are taking notice & he will be at one of them soon.

André Silva can’t stop scoring. He’s put the ball in the back of the net 14 times already this season in 17 games. He’s second in the shooting charts with 63 attempts, which gives him a conversion rate of 22.22%.  He’s contributed 2 assists & I’m excited to see how his partnership with Luka Jović develops in the second half of the season.

All I really need to say is 23 goals in 17 games. Robert Lewandowski has been phenomenal & is well on his way to beating Gerd Müller’s all-time record of 40 goals in a single season. It’s no surprise he’s top of the shooting charts with 73 attempts giving him a conversion rate of 31.5%. Three of those attempts struck the bar or post.

He has evolved his game in recent seasons, becoming more of a team player & producing assists. He’s on 5 already this season & on course to beat his previous high of 7. Probably the best Number 9 of our generation at his best. Enjoy him whilst you can.

GK: Manuel Neuer – The world’s best GK has been in fantastic form, making a total of 52 saves this season. But, only has 4 clean sheets in 18 appearances & conceded 25 goals.
CB: Edmond Tapsoba – The 21-year-old has been brilliant for Leverkusen & one of the league’s best passers with 91.5% accuracy. He only has 2 clean sheets to his name.
MF: Thomas MüllerThe Raumdeuter has 9 goals & 9 assists & started all 18 games for Bayern. He’s 3rd in the charts for distance covered with 204km, which is impressive at 31.
MF: Max Kruse – Indian summer from the veteran who’s brilliant season was halted by injury. Kruse transformed Union’s attacking style with his creativity & contributed 6 goals & 5 assists.
CF: Erling Haaland – Phenomenal but misses out on the starting eleven as he’s only played in two-thirds of the games due to injury. 14 goals from 45 attempts give him a conversion rate of 31.11%, which is almost identical to Lewandowski’s.

Urs Fischer has taken FC Union Berlin from relegation favorites to top-half contenders who could qualify for Europe. They are currently in 8th & went into the winter break in the Top 4. He brought veteran Max Kruse in during the summer & it turned out to be a brilliant signing as they played teams off the park & scored 22 goals in their opening 10 games.

Many thought they would struggle when Kruse picked up his injury. They continued to get results against the big sides with wins over Leverkusen & Dortmund & draws with Bayern, Gladbach & Wolfsburg.
