It’s time to take two teams very seriously in this year’s UEFA Champions League.
Josip Ilicic scored four (!!!) goals to lead Atalanta to a 4-3 (8-4!!! aggregate) win over Valencia today.
In Germany, Marcel Sabitzer’s brace helped RB Leipzig cruise to a 3-0 (4-0 aggreggate) win over a hapless Hotspur squad.
Atalanta is for real. They’re basically 2017-18 Liverpool. They’ve score 87 goals in 33 matches. This is a tough out for squad in the world.
While they have goal scoring options all over the pitch, they’re led by 32 year-old Josip Illicic. Think of him as the Bosnia and Herzegovina version of Jamie Vardy. In front of a totally empty stadium (thanks corona!) at Valencia, he was unstoppable. Just watch:
Atalanta is priced at +2300 to win the Champions League this year. Take a flier on that one. They’re a fun sweat.
RB Leipzig are dynamic but still, it was Jose Mourinho’s Spurs
First and foremost: RB Leipzig are legit. Nobody wants to face this side.
They steamrolled Tottenham on a 4-0 aggregate. But it was Tottenham. Under Jose Mourinho. Who lasted all of a month before he became “Captain Deflector” (credit: ESPN FC). This isn’t a good squad. They’re only going to get worse under Mou’s constant brow-beating. He’s like a disapproving old Sicilian grandmother. Just beats you down.
Still, nothing you can do about this:
Oddsmakers also like Leipzig. They’re now priced at +1700 to win this year’s UCL.
If you’re a fan of aesthetically pleasing soccer, root for these two to draw each other in the quarterfinals.
