Barcelona are actually the underdogs heading into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals against Bayern Munich and know they need to do something special to get the win. They were the direct opposite of special and downright despicable, falling to a 2-8 loss to end a terrible season in the worst possible manner.
They had a terrible start to the game, allowing the German side an early lead in the 4th minute after Thomas Muller linked well with Robert Lewandowski before slotting in a compelling finish.
But Barca bit back almost instantly, getting the equalizer in the 7th minute after Jordi Alba blazed past the entire Bayern defence before his tricky cross was miskicked into his own net by David Alaba, making it 1-1. Bayern didn’t look fazed by that at all and regained the lead in the 22nd minute, when Serge Gnabry snatched away possession outside the Barca penalty area before laying it for Ivan Perisic, who blasted the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The Bavarians then made it 3-1 in the 28th minute after Serge Gnabry eased past the shallow Barca defence before powering the ball into the net. Bayern were relentless after sniffing Barca’s defensive horrorshow and scored again in the 31st after Muller slotted in a clever tap-in to complete his brace.
Luis Suarez picked one back in the 57th after brilliantly clipping past Jerome Boateng to power the ball into the net. Just as Barca hinted at a possible comeback, Bayern scored again in the 63rd after a sublime dribble from ‘The Roadrunner’ Alphonso Davies created an easy tap-in finish for Joshua Kimmich.
Then Robert Lewandowski got his customary goal in the 82th minute after an assist from Barcelona-loanee Philippe Coutinho, capping off the ultimate insult to injury. But no, Coutinho had more in store and actually scored a clever goal minutes later to complete an absolute brutal mauling of Barca. Just when you thought things couldn’t get worse for Barca, they did as Coutinho SCORED AGAIN in the 89th minute to make it 8-2!
This was just an absolute slaughter for Barca. It should be the end of this era and many changes needs to be made for them to be a European giant again. Bayern were absolutely ruthless and are undoubtedly favourites to win the competition now. For Barca this was a reality check for how far they’ve fallen over the years.
Barcelona Player Ratings vs Bayern Munich
Quique Setien (-5) –
If there were any doubts on why Setien isn’t Barca material, this one proves it! He took a bizarre decision to play a 4-4-2 formation, something Barca have never played to see out a result. Predictably, it blew over in his face as Bayern sniffed out their weak points to create a demolition derby. The players didn’t have a clue how to play in this system, were terrible passing the ball out of their own half and looked awful going forward.
He played an old, worn-out team and benched the likes of Fati, Griezmann who should’ve started! His substitutions were too late and made no impact whatsoever, while his team of world-class players played like amateur school children! Setien should just resign and go into isolation after this embarrassment now.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen (0) –
Ter Stegen should’ve done better to save Perisic’s powerful shot that almost went through him. Then saved himself from embarrassment by saving Lewandowski’s attempted tap-in after he failed to parry a whipped in cross.
His distribution has been shocking today, often handing Bayern chances on their plate and he should’ve really done better to deny Gnabry’s strike. He should’ve at least saved 3-4 of the goals today and cannot be debated as ‘one of the best goalies’ in the world after today’s atrocious performance.
Nelson Semedo (-5) –
Semedo was horribly caught out of position which allowed Perisic to run forward with no pressure before finding Muller for his goal. Again found miles away from Perisic during his goal. Sent back to school by Davies for his assist, as the Canadian made him look an absolute fool by gliding past him to assist the 5th goal.
Caught napping again for Lewandowski’s strike and out of position for Coutinho’s goal minutes later. He then played Hernandez onside before his cross clipped him for Coutinho’s second. That was honestly one of the worst defensive performances I’ve ever seen and wouldn’t be surprised if Semedo is sold for this itself.
Gerard Pique (1.0) –
Poor defending for the second goal, making an unnecessary sliding tackle to open things up for Perisic to score. Doing nothing at all to help Semedo and giving no defensive cover at all. He was supposed to be a leader today but himself cowered under pressure, making mistakes in bulks. Should just move on from this role now as he’s just not good enough anymore.
Clement Lenglet (1.0) –
Lenglet has a big job keeping Lewandowski quiet today. Makes a stunning pass to send Alba forward before the equalizer. But he was totally outwitted by Gnabry before his goal, as Lenglet allowed the ball to be chipped over his head too easily before the German’s goal. Again dismal defending to allow Muller to slide past him too easily for his second. Lewandowski played him like a fiddle and Lenglet was absolute ragdolled for most of the game. Like the others, just not good enough.
Jordi Alba (4.0) –
The Spaniard looks to be raring with energy from the get-go and made a brilliant run behind Bayern’s defence to force the own-goal. But defensively he’s all over the place again, allowing Kimmich to send in the cross too easily for Muller’s second. Makes a nice defence-splitting block in the 68th to deny Bayern a sixth goal. To be honest, he was Barca’s only ‘decent’ defender today and got two decent assists too.
Arturo Vidal (2.0) –
Playing against his former side today. Looks pretty energetic and moving all over the place in midfield. But not able to contribute much defensively in this role at all. Got frustrated as the game went on, ran out of all energy and absolute useless after the hour-mark. Must’ve been regretting moving to Barca from Bayern at this point.
Sergio Busquets (2.5) –
Too sloppy with his passing early on and it was his giveaway which kickstarted the move for the opener. Then misses a free header in the 10th that could’ve given Barca the lead! Crumbling under the slightest of pressing and extremely error-prone distributing possession. Defensively awful as well. He was once regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe – today’s shocking performance indicates that maybe its time he considers retirement.
Frenkie De Jong (2.0) –
Playing against his former side today. Looks pretty energetic and moving all over the place in midfield. Unable to find any space or opportunities to create anything in the first half. He was bullied by Bayern’s midfielders today and received no helps from his senior colleagues at all.
Sergi Roberto (3.0) –
Roberto looks a bit nervous in a dual-role today and was stolen out of possession too easily resulting in Perisic’s goal. Apart from a few decent forward runs and one good cross, he was invisible in the first half. Did nothing effective at all!
Lionel Messi (4.0) –
It’s time for Messi to get his ‘best player in the world’ crown back today. Stunning cross in the 10th that went past everyone and hit the post. Then made a trademark dribble through a bunch of bodies but his finishing was poor minutes later. His crosses have been pitch-perfect in first half-hour but nobody seems to score off them!
Played the pitch-perfect long-ball to Alba to open things up before Suarez’s goal. He was boxed out by multiple Bayern players at all time and received NO HELP from those around him. Feel sorry for him. He doesn’t deserve this. Wouldn’t be surprised if he leaves now.
Luis Suarez (7.0) –
The Uruguayan looks menacing with his movement today and slotted past the Bayern defenders in the 9th to go one-v-one with Neuer, but his shot was well saved. Tormented Boateng & co with his movement even with little service and deservedly gets his goal with a cheeky dribble and powerful finish.
Definitely Barca’s best player today. Despite getting little delivery, he carved out chances and was a real terror for Bayern’s defenders. Still has the class to be part of this team next season.
Antoine Griezmann (4.0) –
Can he redeem himself by turning things around for Barca today? Nope! Played in the unnatural, isolated position again and flopped again.
Ansu Fati (N/R) –
The youngster could only watch in horror as the nightmare unfolded. Hopefully he recovers well from this to be a pillar of Barca’s future success.
MAN OF THE MATCH
NOBODY from this Barca team even deserves to be in this contention. Bayern had a number of MOTM-worthy players (including super-sub Coutinho!) But Muller was a class apart with 2 goals & an assist.
