LINE: Bayern Munich -200| Draw +365 | Borussia Dortmund +450
KICK OFF: Wednesday, September 30th, 2:30PM EST
WHERE: Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany
It’s our first Der Klassiker of the season with Bayern Munich facing Borussia Dortmund in the German DFL Super Cup. These two sides have contested six of the last eight Super Cup finals with both lifting the trophy three times each.
This fixture is normally played in early August before the Bundesliga season kicks off. There will be a different feel to this game as each side have three matches under their belts & both will want to bounce back from their defeats at the weekend.
We’ve all enjoyed Bayern Munich’s brilliance over the last few months & we know exactly how they will setup & play. Hansi Flick picks his strongest eleven minus Alphonso Davies. The Canadian didn’t feature in the first two games of the season due to a reported knock. I don’t think he’ll be risked here after playing 90 minutes against Hoffenheim with Lucas Hernández taking his place.
I wouldn’t read too much into Sunday’s 4-1 loss away to Hoffenheim with Robert Lewandowski, Leon Goretzka & Niklas Süle all starting on the bench. Flick is clearly prioritizing trophies & he’ll have Die Roten back to their best for Der Klassiker.
For me, Lucien Favre has to go with experience in this game. It’s unfair to regularly rely on 17 year olds Gio Reyna & Jude Bellingham. Both have started all three of Dortmund’s game this season & have impressed with a goal & an assist each. But there will be off days like we saw against FC Augsburg & this is the ruthless Bayern Munich they’re facing away at the Allianz Arena.
Thomas Delaney has to start in the center of midfield. His ability to break up play & win the ball will take some of the pressure off Alex Witsel. Allowing the Belgian to find space, get on the ball & dictate play. Julian Brandt is a top class player but plagued with inconsistency. They have to gamble with him & hope he has one of his better days.
When these two met back in May, Dortmund were equal to Bayern & pushed them for the full 90 minutes. Favre set his side up in a 3-4-3 & he should utilize this formation again. It served him really well in the second half of last season & I don’t know why he’s abandoned it.
WHO COMES OUT ON TOP?
There have been massive doubts over Lucien Favre’s ability to lead Dortmund to success after they capitulated at the end of the 2018/19 season to hand Bayern the Bundesliga title. This is the final year of his contract & there’s absolutely zero talk between him & the board about an extension.
I have my ideas on who Favre should pick for his starting eleven but I’m really unsure on what he will do. If he does start Julian Brandt & Thomas Delaney it will be their first of the season. On the other hand we have Hansi Flick, who’s first choice eleven is as consistent as the sun rising in the east & setting in the west.
Bayern are the more settled side & way more experienced when it comes to cup finals with this being their fourth in the last three months. Die Roten will find a way to win like they always do. I fully expect this trophy to be the fifth of Hansi Flick’s reign.
