The 2019 MLS season starts on Saturday, March 2nd.
Atlanta United are the defending MLS champs. From their exciting style of play, to their passionate fan base, to their ability to develop players and set record transfer fees, the Five Stripes have given the MLS a jolt. The league is gaining global attention and is more popular now than ever.
Its rise in popularity, along with the emergence of legal sportsbooks in the U.S., has led to an increased interest in betting on the MLS. Here’s cliff notes on how to do it.
MLS Betting Explained – The Moneyline Wager
The easiest way to demonstrate how to bet the MLS is pulling an example from Matchweek 1. We’ll use the lines set at FanDuel Sportsbook NJ.
An important note: the home team is always listed first or top is the home team. This is true if you’re betting the MLS, Premier League, Champions League, etc.
In this example, LAFC is the home team. Sporting KC is away. You’ll see it represented these two ways:
-105 +280 +250
|LAFC -105||Draw +280||Sporting KC +250|
This is a Moneyline Bet, or a straight bet. The moneyline bet is the most straight-forward wager. It simply means that you’re picking a team to win. There’s no point spread involved. The downside is that you typically need to wager a fair amount more to win said bet if you’re betting the favorite.
In this example, LAFC, the home team, is the favorite. They’re priced at -105. If you like LAFC in this fixture, then how do you bet it? LAFC at -105 means you need to bet $105 to win $100 (or, say, $10.50 to win $10). If you like Sporting KC here at +250, then a $100 wager would win you $250. Similarly, a $100 wager on the draw would win $280.
MLS Prop Bets
Most legal sportsbooks offer a variety of wagers called “prop bets.” You’ll either see a “More Wagers” link or “Prop Bets” tab on your online betting site.
Using the LAFC vs. Sporting KC example again, you could place a Correct Score Prop bet on the game. On FanDuel NJ, they list 78 possible game scores. If you like LAFC and think they’ll win 1-0, that’s listed at +1000. That means you would bet $100 to win $1000. If you like Sporting KC to pull an upset, you them to win 1-0 at +1600 (so a $100 bet wins $1600). If you think it’ll be higher scoring, you could grab KC to win 3-2 at +2500 (so $100 wins $2500). And so on…
Another popular soccer prop bet is Total Goals or Goal Props. This is a basic over/under bet. Put quite simply its how many times the ball finds the back of the net, regardless of the team. For this game some Goal Props are:
Over/Under 0.5 Goals
Over -3000 | Under +1650
So if you think it’s going to be a scoreless draw, you’d bet $100 to win $1650. If you’re confident one of the teams will find the back of the net, then you’d have to bet $3000 to win $100.
Over/Under 2.5 Goals
Over -178 | Under +150
More realistically, these teams will score. If you think at least 3 goals will be scored, then bet $178 to win $100. If you think it’ll be more of a defensive game, then bet $100 to win $150.
