Bundesliga Betting 21/22: Gladbach vs Bayer Leverkusen Betting Preview

Written By Alex Blowers on January 14, 2022

This weekend’s marquee Bundesliga fixture sees Borussia Mönchengladbach host Bayer Leverkusen in Saturday’s late game. The hosts will be full of confidence after handling Bayern Munich again last weekend. In three meetings this season, Die Fohlen have won twice and drawn one.

You will be surprised to read that they are down in twelfth and four points off the relegation zone. New manager Adi Hütter has struggled to get the best out of his talented squad, but his job is pretty safe. The club paid top dollar to release him from his Eintracht Frankfurt contract and aren’t in a position financially to sack him and his staff.

Instead, they’ve signed Marvin Friedrich for an undisclosed fee to solve their defensive issues. The center back has been solid for FC Union Berlin, helping the club establish themselves in the Bundesliga and qualify for Europe last season. At 26-years-old his best soccer is ahead of him, and he’s a good signing for Gladbach.

Leverkusen are on a poor run of form, failing to win in their last five matches across all competitions. Their new manager Gerardo Seoane will be afforded more time, and they’re only one point off the UEFA Champions League spots.

Attacking midfielder Nadiem Amiri is on his way out of the club with a move to Genoa lined up. He’s a talented playmaker I like a lot, but inconsistency has limited him to three starts this season, and it’s time to move on.

Out: Ramy Bensebaini (Africa Cup of Nations), Mamadou Doucouré (Covid-19), Jonas Hofmann (Knee)
Doubtful: Christoph Kramer (Illness)
Suspended: None
Coach: Adi Hütter

Christopher Kramer’s illness will force Hütter to make changes to the side that beat Bayern 2-1 in Matchday 18.

Denis Zakaria will come into central midfield, and it could be one of his last games for the club. He recently announced his intention to leave when his contract expires in the summer. Rather than lose him for free, the club could cash in now with Manchester United, Newcastle, Arsenal, and Liverpool all interested.

Joe Scally is available and should replace Luca Netz at left wing-back. The USMNT prospect has been ever-present this season, starting 17 games. New signing Marvin Friedrich could come straight into the starting lineup for one of the back three. This would be the second time in a week he’s faced Leverkusen after playing for Union in their 2-2 draw last Saturday.

Doubtful: Charles Aránguiz (Match Fitness)

Coach: Gerardo Seoane

With limited options, I think Gerardo Seoane will name a similar side to the one that drew 2-2 with Union last weekend. The only change will be Karim Bellerabi coming into the frontline for Paulinho, who tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this week.

Patrik Schick kicked off 2022 by getting on the scoresheet. He sits on 17 and three behind Robert Lewandowski. It would be a phenomenal achievement if he finished the season outscoring the world’s best Number 9.

The one consistent thing we’ve seen from these two sides this season is goals. There have been 72 in Leverkusen’s and 57 in Gladbach’s 18 Bundesliga fixtures, and I think that is the safest bet to take here.

Over 3.5 goals is available at +105, but I think there’s better value backing a couple of goals or more in the first half. Four of Gladbach’s and Leverkusen’s last five Bundesliga matches have featured two goals or more in the opening 45 minutes.
