Is soccer really returning to Germany within the next 30 days?
It certainly appears so.
Earlier this week, Bundesliga clubs resumed training. Now, plans are in motion to restart league play by early May.
Bundesliga returns in May
Both the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga are aiming for an early May return. There would be no fans allowed at the matches. The goal would be to complete the season by the end of June.
If that schedule remains, the Bundesliga would surely be the first major European domestic league to start and finish its 2019-20 season.
The Premier League is unlikely to return until June or possibly July. Serie A and La Liga are suspended indefinitely.
This could be a very interesting time for the Bundesliga. It’s the highest scoring domestic league. ESPN owns its US broadcast rights for 2020-21. Filling a content void, attracting viewership from a sports-starved public, and then moving to ESPN could provide a real boon in its popularity.
Additionally, if the Champions League does resume this season, German clubs are well positioned to advance in the tournament.
This is worth monitoring. In 2-3 years we may look back and identify this time as when the Bundesliga caught up to the Premier League for prestige and popularity.
