2019-20 UEFA Champions League Group Stage Results (Tuesday, Matchday 5)

  • Real Madrid 2 – PSG 2
  • Atalanta 2 – Dinamo Zagreb 0
  • Juventus 1 – Atletico Madrid 0
  • Manchester City 1 – Shakhtar Donestsk 1
  • Galatasaray 1 – Club Brugge 1
  • Tottenham 4 – Olympiakos 2
  • Red Star Belgrade 0 – Bayern Munich 6
  • Locomotiv Moscow 0 – Bayer Leverkusen 2

Let’s dig deeper into some of the storylines.

Who’s has advanced to knockout round

  • PSG win Group A
  • Real Madrid advance as #2 in Group A
  • Bayern Munich win Group B
  • Tottenham advance as #2 in Group B
  • Manchester City win Group C
  • Juventus win Group D

Who still has work to do

While Groups A and B are decided, Groups C and D make for an interesting final matchday.

Group C

For matchday 6, Shakhtar Donetsk host Atalanta. Dinamo Zagreb host Man City. If Shakhtar win, they’re in. If Atalanta win and Dinamo draw or tie, they’re in.

If Dinamo win and Shakhtar draw or tie, they’re in. If Dinamo draw and Shakhtar lose, then both end with 6 points. They drew both matches against each other and have the same number of goals both matches. In that case, Shakhtar advance on away goals (3) in their draw.

Group D

Atletico Madrid has really crapped the bed here. The good news for them is they host Lokomotiv Moscow for matchday 6. A win there and they advance.

Bayer Leverkusen are still alive too. If Atleti fail to win, Bayer hosts Juventus. A Bayer win and a Atleti loss or tie and Bayer advances.

If Bayer draws and Atleti loses, then Atleti advance.

Paulo Dybala defies logic and gravity

Agree with the B/R Live tweet. This doesn’t even compute. Paulo Dybala delivers Juve the win with this stunner.

Man City lol

The Premier League’s third place team, Manchester City, had another lackluster result at the Etihad. The FOURMIDABLES drew Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1.

Regardless, City have won their comically easy group and will advance to the Round of 16 as they barrel towards their eventual quarterfinal collapse.

Are PSG for real or not?

This match was supposed to show us if PSG were for real. They looked like fool’s gold once again. And then…

Is this comeback more of a statement about PSG or Real Madrid?

Bayern Munich ARE for real

Robert Lewankdowski is in the midst of his greatest season ever. He netted 4 today. Lewandowski has 10 in the UCL to go with his 16 in the Bundesliga. Math math math…that’s 26 goals in 17 games. Absurd.

He scored his 4 goals in 14 minutes and 31 seconds. That’s a UCL record.

It’s time to start seriously considering Bayern Munich as a legit title contender. They look like 2017-28 Liverpool right now.

You think Jose Mourinho knows this is his last chance to restore his rep?

Olympiakos went up 2-0 at Spurs. The number of “Spurs lol” texts circulating my #ynwa group was staggering. Then Tottenham poured in four. The 4-2 result put Spurs through. You think newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho was happy about that?
