The 2019-20 UEFA Champions League completed group play today. Here’s a look at UCL Round of 16 information such as who is in and when is the draw.
Who has qualified for the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League round of 16?
Teams who won groups:
- PSG (Group A)
- Bayern Munich (Group B)
- Manchester City (Group C)
- Juventus (Group D)
- Liverpool (Group E)
- Barcelona (Group F)
- RB Leipzig (Group G)
- Valencia (Group H, over Chelsea and Ajax!).
Teams who finished second (in “ABC”/group order):
- Real Madrid
- Atalanta (after getting 1 point through their first four!)
- Atlético Madrid
- Borussia Dortmund
Congrats to Atlético Madrid, which scored multiple goals in the same game for the first time in way too long to advance.
I’m singling them out here because A) they were one of the few teams whose fate was truly up in the air going into this afternoon and B) they’d been shut out in their last three games before Wednesday and had not scored twice or more since November 10. That’s over a month!
The other result from today that is worth highlighting is Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk. Despite losing their first three in group play, the high-scoring Italians are moving on thanks to a poor group besides City and a strong finish: Atalanta has since drawn Man City and shut out Dinamo Zagreb (Matchday 5) and Shakthar (Matchday 6) to earn its place with seven points.
We also know for sure who won’t be sticking around, but there was enough grieving about a certain Dutch club’s demise yesterday, so we’re focusing here on the clubs that are going through.
When is the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw?
Next Monday, December 16, at UEFA HQ in Nyon, Switzerland at noon Central European Time (6am ET). The draw will tell us who will meet who in the Round of 16 scheduled for February 18-19 and February 25-26 (first legs) and March 10-11 and March 17-18 (second legs).
How does the draw work?
It’s a pretty straightforward process. The eight group winners are seeded, while the second-place teams are unseeded. Those groups of teams are in separate bowls, with each seeded team paired with an unseeded team. The only restrictions are the ones that prevent a team from facing someone from either its group or its domestic league – so no Liverpool-Napoli rematch, yet. Staying in the EPL, no Liverpool-City, either, at least not this round.
