Christian Pulisic’s First Start for Chelsea: How’d He Do?

Written By Bayne on July 26, 2019

Christian Pulisic made his first team debut for Chelsea in a friendly against Barcelona on Tuesday. The Blues looked solid, beating the Catalans 2-1. How did Pulisic do in the match?

From what we saw, he’s going to make new manager Frank Lampard very happy.

Christian Pulisic’s debut against Barcelona

Pulisic’s blistering pace and panache for dribbling out of trouble on the left flank left Barca’s defenders mostly watching him scoot by unscathed. An early “should have been” assist was blasted over the bar by Tammy Abraham.  Later, a near post attempt blasted the side netting at a tight angle.

It doesn’t look like Pulisic will be wearing the coveted #10 jersey this year, as the Brazilian Willian has already announced that he’s been offered it. However Pulisic’s performance against one of the top teams in the world certainly speaks to his ability to compete at the highest levels.

In the meantime, Americans will have to wait to make their jersey purchases until his squad number is announced.

Two friendlies await, plus an exhibition match in NY, before Chelsea’s opener away vs Manchester United on August 11th. Chelsea find themselves underdogs in the match-up, priced at +240 to Man U’s +117 (draw is +240 as well).
