Ernesto Valverde has reportedly been sacked by Barcelona.
He has been on the hot seat much of the season. Barca far too often have looked like a team that has no answers or game plan other than “Give Messi the ball.”
However, Valverde’s time with the Catalans has been far from a failure.
Since arriving at Camp Nou in May 2017, he has posted a 66.9% win rate. Barcelona has won the following under his guidance:
- La Liga: 2017–18, 2018–19
- Copa del Rey: 2017–18
- Spanish Supercopa: 2018
Barcelona also currently sit atop La Liga and look poised to win their third straight domestic crown.
It’s what Valverde hasn’t won though that helped create this situation. Barcelona has had back-to-back epic Champions League meltdowns against Roma (quarters, 2018) and Liverpool (semis, 2019).
And now his watch has ended.
Barcelona new manager odds
So who will replace him? Bookmakers like the following candidates with one major surprise:
- Quique Setién +200
- Mauricio Pochettino +350
- Xavi +600
- Massimiliano Allegri +2000
- Ronald Koeman +3300
- Luis Enrique +3300
Quique’s odds don’t make a ton of sense unless the bookies know something we don’t. His profile and track record don’t scream “Barcelona.”
This whole rapid self-created mess by Barcelona happened over their discovered pursuit of Xavi. Would he reconsider the role now that Valverde is out?
The two names that absolutely make the most sense are Poch and Allegri. Both are immediately available and have great value at their current pricing.
