How Talented Is the USMNT Compared to Canada?

Written By High Press 10 on October 20, 2019

On a recent ESPN FC episode (and note, we love ESPN FC), Craig Burley was discussing how the USMNT players are just “bang average” and we shouldn’t be surprised by their recent struggles.

Whether or not that’s accurate (it mostly is), the US definitely has some top-shelf developing talent. And it definitely has more than Canada.

Seeing how Christian Pulisic (final third pass leading to goal), Josh Sargent (goal seen below), and Zack Steffen (clean sheet) performed this weekend for their clubs, it’s worth closing the loop on the USMNT debacle vs Canada by comparing their relative levels of talent.

The end result is: the problem isn’t with the players. DeAndre Yedlin confirmed as much this weekend.

Granted, Tyler Boyd didn’t play. Jozy Altidore was injured. But almost without exception, the US player has a stronger past and current track record than his Canadian counterpart.

So the problems then is Gregg Berhalter?

Yeah, that’s basically it.

Let’s see if Berhalter figures this out by November 15th when the two teams play again.
