Lionel Messi Next Club Odds: Juventus Favorite, PSG Best Bet

Posted By High Press 10 on July 4, 2020

Rumors are flying that Lionel Messi is unhappy at Barcelona and is looking for an exit.

Messi has been increasingly unhappy (and vocal) about Barca’s leadership. The team appears rudderless under new manager Quique Setien. The squad is aging. The club may have major financial issues.

If Messi leaves Barcelona, where would he go? Oddsmakers have priced it out. Here’s a look at those odds (pulled from a number of operators) as well as our thoughts on where he’ll likely end up.

Lionel Messi next club odds

Juventus +400Manchester City +600
PSG +750Manchester United +2000
Liverpool +2000MLS +2000
Real Madrid +6600Bayern Munich +6600

Messi to Juventus?

Juventus is the favorite on all betting sites. On one hand, it’s understandable. Juve, PSG, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Manchester United are among the only clubs that could afford The Goat.

However, Juventus already has one super-duper-star with an enormous wage bill and ego: Cristiano Ronaldo. Could two forwards who both demand the ball and are north of 33 years old really co-exist effectively on and off the pitch?

This only makes sense if Ronaldo leaves Turin after the season. Nothing indicates he will.

Messi to PSG?

Lionel Messi is 33 years old. The ideal situation for him is to play on an elite team competing in the Champions League with a low impact domestic schedule. Is there a better descriptor for PSG than that?

Messi would get to re-unite with Neymar, a player he greatly respects on the pitch. He could coast in Ligue 1 games and still tally 20+ goals a season.

PSG should be the favorite and is one of the only clubs that truly makes sense.

Messi to MLS?

While no specific squad is priced yet, there are some Messi to MLS futures available. Messi has expressed an openness to coming to the US. David Beckham’s Inter Miami makes the most sense.

A Messi-to-MLS move would be done with an eye towards retirement. Messi growing his presence in the US could send his personal brand past Ronaldo’s in value. He’d break every offensive single season record in MLS if he moved this year. From a strictly business perspective, this is the smartest move.

Where Messi isn’t going

As for other teams listed:

  • Speaking of increasing his personal brand value, he simply cannot go to Real Madrid. That would be the ultimate wrestling heel move.
  • Manchester City isn’t happening either. Messi will not waste his remaining post-prime years NOT playing in the Champions League.
  • Manchester United could be a possibility. The Red Devils are highly focused on their brand and bottomline, and both Messi and club would benefit from that pairing.
  • Could you imagine Messi high-pressing on the wing at Liverpool??? Neither could we.

What about Barcelona?

The most likely scenario is that Messi and Barca work things out and he stays.

However, where there is smoke, there is fire. The Messi rumors are real. This is a situation worth monitoring all summer.
