Liverpool Player Ratings at Chelsea (January 2, 2022)

Written By High Press 10 on January 2, 2022

With Manchester City pulling in the Premier League title race, today’s Chelsea vs Liverpool clash is essentially a loser-leaves-town match.

For Liverpool, complicating matters further is they lose Sadio Mane and Mo Salah for one to two matches for 2022 World Cup qualifying.

Jurgen Klopp misses today’s match as well, as he’s down with COVID-19. Pep Lijnders takes the reigns until Klopp returns.

An open and exciting first half ends 2-2. Sadio Mane and Mo Salah score wonderful goals. Mateo Kovacic’s worldy volley claws one back before the break. Then Christian Pulisic levels it 2-2 in first half stoppage.

The second half saw both sides squander a couple of chances. It ends 2-2. Just give the title to Man City.

Here are Liverpool player ratings at Chelsea.

Liverpool Player Ratings at Chelsea

Manager

Pep Lijnders (4) –

Certainly familiar enough with the team to handle a match. Team comes out a little flat after halftime. Don’t like his subbing of Keita for Milner. Was right to sub off Jota for Ox though. Don’t get the Jones for Mane sub towards stoppage either.

Goalkeeper

Caoimhín Kelleher (8) –

Gets the start as Ali is out with COVID. Brilliant save on Pulisic in the 7th. Doesn’t go too early and fantastic hand work. Bravo. Brilliant free kick save but then Kovicic’s worldy gets by him. Nothing he can do there.

Another gorgeous save in the 62nd minute. Can’t put either goal on him today and he made some outrageous saves.

Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold (7) –

Need a big performance from him today. Some of his passes are off the mark. Until he sets up Salah with a brilliant assist. Was the best of the backline but not spectacular.

Virgil van Dijk (6) –

Fairly average today. Only completed 69% of his passes. His long passes weren’t finding the mark.

Ibra Konate (5) –

Excited to see if Konate and VVD prove to be an impenetrable wall. And that would be a no. Shaky. Not an encouraging showing.

Kostas Tsimikas (6) –

Gets another start due to Robbo’s red. Active and defending well. However, as the match wears on, gets tired and his service slips.

Midfielders

James Milner (7) –

All about his defensive work today. Big block in the 16th stops a potential dangerous shot. Probably our best defender today. Subbed off for Keita in the 69th. Don’t agree with that one.

Jordan Henderson (5) –

Quiet day. No shots. Build up play was pedestrian.

Fabinho (6) –

Doing well policing the middle. Some heady defending.

Forwards

Sadio Mane (7) –

Hasn’t scored in 9. Has never gone 10 for Liverpool without scoring. And hasn’t scored any of Liverpool’s last 25 goals. Could use a strong showing before heading off for WC qualifying. Instead, lucky to NOT get a red carded with an idiotic challenge in first 6-7 seconds.

Then atones for it all with an ambitious left-footed finish to put Liverpool up in the 9th minute. Almost gets a brace in the 59th but Mendy denied him. Subbed late.

Mo Salah (7) –

Just misses a good opp in the 6th minute after a strong run in the box. Doesn’t get the credit he should for his role in build-up play, so noting that now. His goal to put Liverpool up 2-0 was another worldy. Not an easy finish, the whole build-up, touch, and finish was brilliant.

Somehow denied another goal in the 57th minute after an absurd Mendy save.

Diogo Jota (5) –

Ineffective today. Completed less than 50% of his passes. No shots. Rightly subbed off in the 69th.

Substitutions

Naby Keita (5) – On for Milner in the 69th.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (5) – On for Jota in the 69th. Doesn’t make an impact.

Curtis Jones (NR) – Late sub for Mane.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Without Kelleher, could’ve been a Liverpool L. He gets Man of the Match.
