Liverpool Player Ratings vs Arsenal (Carabao Cup Round of 16)

Posted By High Press 10 on October 1, 2020

Just a few days after playing them in Premier League competition, Liverpool face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup Round of 16.

Jurgen Klopp has put together an interesting starting XI that indicates he wants to win this.

Liverpool fired off a number of shots towards the end of the first half, but otherwise it was fairly pedestrian. 0-0 at the half.

The second verse was same as the first. Liverpool had more chances but Leno kept denying them. In the end, the Reds lose their second pk shootout of the year to Arsenal. Leno comes up big with two saves, and the Gunners advance 0-0 (5-4 pens).

Here are Liverpool player ratings vs Arsenal in the Carabao Cup Round of 16

Liverpool Player Ratings

Manager

Jurgen Klopp (6) –

Certainly like the thought behind this line-up. Klopp is showcasing Grujic and Harry Wilson before the October 5 transfer window closes. Promising youngster Rhys Williams gets another start. VVD stays in the doghouse. And we get the starting debut of Jota paired with a potent frontline of Taki and Mo.

Doesn’t do much tactically. Shifts Wilson to right forward when Gini comes on but nothing changes formationally.

Goalkeeper

Adrian (8) –

Was impressive last week. Gets another go at it. He’s needed early and does a great job keeping a dangerous shot going off in the 8th minute. Comes up with a huge save off a corner in the 70th. Would’ve been a MotM performance had he saved that last shootout attempt.

Defenders

Neco Williams (7) –

Does well handling Pepe’s stupid dancing with the ball early. Looks more like the form he ended 2019-20 with…great going forward.

Virgil van Dijk (5) –

Still in the dog house, presumably. Might still be as Arsenal is carving up Liverpool early on. Like VVD doesn’t give a fuck. Totally careless turnover in the 41st that he’s fortunate wasn’t handled better by the Gunners. Couple decent attempts on goal offensively. Subbed out for Gomez.

Rhys Williams (7) –

The 19 year-old deservedly gets another start. Honestly, better than VVD. Smooth and confident throughout.

James Milner (7.5) –

Providing some steadiness and calm as Arsenal challenges early. Solid defending. A daring stoppage time interception shuts Arsenal down.

First to take pk, buries it.

Midfielders

Harry Wilson (6) –

Will this be the last time we see Harry in Red? Strong match. Defensive work has been surprising. Really doing his best to get involved. Missed his pk.

Curtis Jones (7.5) –

Will be brimming with confidence after last week. Off-ball work impressive this match. The Scouse works hard and is constantly pressing. Solid penalty taken.

Marko Grujic (7) –

Somebody buy him already. He’s been sharp again. Confidently going for shots and finding open spaces.

Forwards

Takumi Minamino (6) –

Really linking up well with Salah and Jota. Almost puts the Reds ahead in first half stoppage. Not much in second half. Clobbers his pk.

Diogo Jota (8) –

Sooooo good on ball. Great run and ball into Grujic that should’ve been the opener. Earns a free kick just outside the box towards the end of the half and then just misses on a header after that. Unlucky to come off in the 76th minute. Was Liverpool’s best of the front three.

Mo Salah (5) –

Expected more from Mo in the first half. Was the least effective of the front 3. Subbed off in the 61st minute for Big Div. No real impact at all.

Substitutions

Divock Origi (5) – On for Mo. Too casual on pk–missed it.

Joe Gomez (6) – On for VVD.

Gini Wijnaldum (6) – On in the 76th for Jota. Typical workmanlike display. Hits his pk.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Hard to really say. It would’ve been Adrian had the Reds won the shootout. We’ll go with Jota who often looked like the best player on the pitch.
