Liverpool Player Ratings vs Brighton (July 8, 2020): Neco Gets the Start!

Posted By High Press 10 on July 8, 2020

The Premier League is (arguably) the best domestic competition in the world because of its depth. Any team can win on any given day (for this season, just see Norwich vs Man City). Liverpool don’t have many matches left that look like sure-fire “W’s.” This road test vs Brighton might actually be the last one.

Will the Reds take care of business?

Liverpool start the half on fire, with Mo Salah and Jordan Henderson scoring in the first 8 minutes. However, their intensity drops and they concede too many opportunities to Brighton as the half goes on. At the break, Liverpool hold a shaky 2-1 lead.

Klopp’s makes the right subs that steady the ship. Salah is on fire and drives home a great header to put Liverpool up 3-1. That score holds as Liverpool becomes the fastest team to 90 points in EPL history.

Here are Liverpool vs Brighton player ratings for July 8h

Liverpool Starting XI vs Brighton

Welcome to the starting XI, Neco Williams! We expect this to be the first of many.

Liverpool Player Ratings

Jurgen Klopp (7) –

Not sure about this. Ox has been much more impactful in the midfield than the front 3. Mane has been clutch scoring important goals all season. The Looks Great In Training Naby KeitaTM still only looks great in training. Let’s see how this goes.

Picks the right XI, but just can’t get the lads locked in consistently. Does well on substitutions, taking off the vulnerable Williams at HT. He pulls an ineffective Ox for Mane in the 60th minute.

Alisson (8) –

Alert coming off line (and box) to head out a threat in the 13th minute. Comes up with a huge save by getting big on Maupey in the 28th. Nothing he could do about the goal.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (6) –

Has only looked like his old self since the re-start against Palace. Hopefully that changes today. Certainly looks that way early. Leads Liverpool in possession though little end product to show for it.

Virgil van Dijk (7) –

While the defense hasn’t looked great, he hasn’t been the problem. On the ball much less than normal (about 50% less, actually) but fairly steady.

Joe Gomez (6.5) –

Sharper today than he has been. Good block in the 36th. However, continues habit of potentially dangerous fouls. Also lost his mark on Trossard for the Brighton goal.  Draws a smart yellow to kill a goal scoring chance in the 89th. Up and down today.

Neco Williams (5.5) –

First Liverpool start for the 19 year-old. Expect a lively and confident display.

Well, definitely lively early. However, struggling with accuracy and decisions. He’s clearly pressing himself. But then he has a very heady block in the box to save a goal and shortly thereafter exhibits some nifty footwork to create space and deliver a cross that just misses Mo’s head. Up and down first half. Up offensively, down defensively.

Klopp must’ve had some defensive concerns though, as Neco comes off for Robbo at HT.

The Looks Great in Training Naby KeitaTM (6) –

When is Naby Keita finally going to happen? Wait…maybe today? Feeds Salah well for the opener. Zipping around the midfield. Has his fleeting moments but not the world beater he supposedly is in training. Comes off for Fabinho in the 60th minute.

Jordan Henderson (8) –

The Captain comes through with a great finish for Liverpool’s second goal. In the 23rd minute, shows why he’s the captain by running down Lamptey on a counter. Flirts with a brace twice. Comes off with a potential injury in the 80th minute.

Gini Wijnaldum (7) –

Come to the conclusion that for Liveprool, Gini seems to be more impactful off the bench than as a starter. He plays with an edge as a sub that sometimes is lacking when he’s penciled in the XI.

Not contributing to the attack but give him high marks defensively. When he recognized Liverpool needed more help defensively, he dropped back and was solid. Alert in clearing a potential goal in the 59th minute. Couple of near misses on goal.

Mo Salah (9) –

Mo continues his strong performances of late. Great, precise, clinical finish on the opener. Then lays off and finds Hendo for the assist on the second goal. Continues to press–Mo is hungry for goals. Gets his brace on a pin-point header off a Robbo corner. Kept grinding for goals all the way to the end. Should’ve had a hat-trick.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (5) –

Gets the nod over Mane. Just doesn’t impact the game when he’s not in mid. Off in the 60th for Mane.

Roberto Firmino (6) –

Back in as a starter after getting some rest on Sunday. Hasn’t scored in 10 league games so hopefully that rest pays off. Clever in linking up and looking sharp. Muffs a great counter opportunity towards end of match. Off for Minamino in the 87th.

Andy Robertson (7.5) – Comes on for Neco at the half. Immediately shores up the left flank defensively while marauding on the attack. Earns an assist with a perfect corner to Mo. Although he only played a half, he was Liverpool’s best defender today.

Sadio Mane (7) – On at the 60th for Ox. Liverpool looked better as soon as he came on.

Fabinho (5) – Comes on in the 60th minute for Keita. Earned a yellow but not much else.

James Milner (NR) – On late for an injured Hendo.

Takumi Minamino (NR) – On late for Bobby. Almost got one late.

Running down the wing…Sa-la-la-la-lah! One of Mo’s best performances of the season.
