Liverpool Player Ratings vs Burnley (August 21, 2021)

Written By High Press 10 on August 21, 2021

Liverpool welcomes a full Anfield crowd for the first time since pre-pandemic.

Burnley has caused Liverpool issues in the past, both from their physicality and how deep they set.

Jurgen Klopp tries to solve this problem by giving Harvey Elliott a start in a more advanced midfield role. He also goes with in form Diogo Jota over Roberto Firmino

This feels like a classic Liverpool game under Klopp. The wingbacks are firing in cross after cross. With the exception of a brief period at the start of the second half, the Reds dominate possession. Goals by Jota and Sadio Mane give Liverpool a comfortable 2-0 win.

Kostas Tsimikis had a particularly stand out match. Good signs all around.

Here are Liverpool player ratings vs Burnley for August 21, 2021.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs Burnley

Manager

Jurgen Klopp (8) –

Well, looks like we know his new preferred frontline, as Jota gets the nod again over Bobby. Squad already feels to be in top midseason form.

Goalkeeper

Alisson (8) –

Typical Ali. Not called on a lot but when he is, he comes up big with 2 saves. Another clean sheet.

Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold (9) –

Constant probing and crossing. The offensive work pays off as he earns an assist on Mane’s goal. Saw the most possession of any Red today. Classic Trent.

Virgil Van Dijk (7) –

Calms and steady. Wins five aerials. Well positioned to snuff out a couple of threats. Showing no signs of rust.

Joel Matip (8) –

So underrated. Uses long limbs to get in the way of a couple counters. Wins 8 aerials and even gets 3 shots off.

Kostas Tsimikas (9) –

Really looking good, especially given it looks like he’s been on a weeklong coke bender. Perfect ball in to Jota for an assist on the opener. Defending very physical too. Subbed off in stoppage to loud applause.

Midfielders

Naby Keita (6) –

Anonymous performance. Nothing terrible at least, but nothing particularly great. Subbed off in the 80th.

Jordan Henderson (7) –

Skipper gets the start over Fabinho, who last his dead this week. Shows really fancy and technical footwork early on. Doing well to connect the backline and frontline. Can still hear him barking even with a full Anfield.

Harvey Elliott (7) –

First league start! Klopp hoping Elliott can solve some of the creativity issues in the midfield. Elliott is doing well and seeing lots of the ball. Some poor decisions and turnovers but you see all of the talent.

Forwards

Sadio Mane (7) –

Much more active today than last week. Got off six shots. Good finish on his goal.

Diogo Jota (8) –

Can we acknowledge how good Jota is with headers? Buries his chance to put Liverpool up in the 18th. Subbed off in the 80th for Firmino.

Mo Salah (7) –

Rips off five shots and a constant threat. VAR disallows a goal. Deserved a goal or assist. Mo looks sharp.

Substitutions

Roberto Firmino (NR) – Subbed on in the 80th for Jota. No real time to make an impact.

Thiago (NR) – First appearance in front of an Anfield crowd.

Joe Gomez (NR) – Comes on in stoppage to kill the clock.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Going with Tsimikas today. He won’t displace Robbo any time soon but he had himself a day.
