Here we are: the Carabao Cup final! And what a match-up.
Liverpool are going for their first trophy of the 2021-22 campaign. Having one the Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup already, Chelsea are going for their third.
Manchester City, who care more about winning the Carabao Cup than any club in England, sit on the sidelines and weep.
Open and exciting first half ends 0-0. Both teams had huge chances but Mendy and Kelleher came up big.
Joel Matip puts Liverpool up in the second half, but the goal is disallowed from a ridiculously bad VAR overrule.
Full time ends at 0-0. And 30 minutes of stoppage doesn’t make a difference. 0-0 at the end of extra time. It’s goes to PKs.
And wow. What a pk shootout. Thomas Tuchel subs in Kepa Arrizabalaga with two minutes left in stoppage as he’s their “pk specialist.”
Every. Single. PK. Is. Made. Each side goes 10 for 10. Meaning Kepa saved zero. Then Kelleher buries his pk and it’s up to Kepa, the pk specialist.
Kepa skies it all the way to Kelleher’s hometown in Ireland. LIVERPOOOL WIN. Epic cup final. 11-10 in pks. Wow.
Liverpool now tie Manchester United for most total trophies in England.
Liverpool Player Ratings vs Chelsea (Carabao Cup Final)
Jurgen Klopp (8) –
Runs out a strong line-up while also rewarded Kelleher for getting us to the final. Gets the subs right. Steers the ship well.
Caoimhín Kelleher (10) –
Klopp said he’s run with Kelleher in the final and we don’t disagree with that decision. He earned it.
Comes up with a huge quick reaction save to Pulisic’s close range shot early. Saves another good Pulisic shot in the 39th. Makes another crazy quick reaction leg save in stoppage to rob Lukaku and keep it level.
While he doesn’t make any saves in the shootout, he buries his pk to give the Reds the win. What a showing.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (8) –
Constant threat up the flanks. Defending his ass off, especially as the game goes on. Buries his pk. Solid day by Trent.
Virgil van Dijk (8) –
Some causal defending to start the second half puts Liverpool under constant pressure.
Unfairly called offside on Matip’s opener. Total bullshit.
Doesn’t lose steam like some others in stoppage. Buries his pk.
Joel Matip (8) –
Gets in the way of a dangerous box attempt at the 15 minute mark. Scores the opener on a header but VAR unfairly disallows it due to a bullshit offside call on VVD in the build up. Great defending.
Comes off in extra time for Konate.
Andy Robertson (7) –
Seeing a good amount of the ball but not much to show for it. Great pk.
Fabinho (6) –
His defending throughout has been fantastic. Completed 94% of his passes. Goes second in the pk pecking order for Liverpool and not surprisingly bangs it in.
Naby Keita (6) –
Thiago was tabbed to start, but got injured in warm-ups, so Keita gets the nod (ugh). Blasts a technically perfect shot in the 30th that Mendy makes a miraculous save on. Basically castrates Trevoh Chalobah in the 59th minute. Subbed out for Milner. Not his worst.
Jordan Henderson (6) –
Some good moments. Barking a lot. Subbed off for Elliott.
Mo Salah (7) –
Some fancy dance moves early trying to create an opportunity. Wastes a 1vs1 with Mendy in the 64th he absolutely should’ve finished. Just can never get open for a big chance. Drills his pk.
Luis Diaz (7) –
Been dazzling for the Reds so far. Is he ready for his first Liverpool cup final?
So much pace. Threatening but finishing is off. Misses a 1vs1 he should’ve burried. Easily seen the most of the ball among the forwards during the first 90.
Runs out of steam in stoppage and subbed off for Origi.
Sadio Mane (6) –
Somehow muffs a header way wide in the 18th. Needs to be more clinical. Unlucky in the 30th as Mendy somehow makes a crazy reaction save.
Should’ve gotten assist on Matip’s disallowed goal.
Harvey Elliott (7) – Not even in the original 20 but added when Thiago went out and now finds himself on the pitch. On for Hendo. Some good turns. Makes his pk.
James Milner (7) – On for Keita. Sends some ambitious shots off. Defends well. Leads off the pk shootout and makes it.
Diogo Jota (6) – Comes on for Mane. Makes his pk.
Ibra Konate (NR) – On in stoppage for Matip to stop Lukaku. Closest among the Reds to missing his pk but ultimately has too much power on it. In.
Divock Origi (NR) – On in stoppage for Diaz. Coolly hits his pk.
MAN OF THE MATCH
0-0 in stoppage with big saves and a great pk. Kelleher, you’re our Man of the Match.
