Three month ago I would never believe I’d be writing this sentence but here we are: The match today, March 4th 2021, between Liverpool and Chelsea is critical for the Reds’ chances of finishing in the top 4 this season.
That’s right, the Reds are in real danger of missing out on Champions League qualification.
Fabinho and Alisson are back in the XI. Jota is on the bench. Expect a super sub appearnace. Let’s get right into it.
Just not good enough. Chelsea up 1-0 at the half and it’s not really that close. This sucks.
Nothing improves in the second half. Liveprool manage one shot on target all match. One. At Anfield. Chelsea win 1-0.
This makes it five straight Anfield losses. Unreal. That’s NEVER HAPPENED. Ever. In the history of the club.
How bad is it? At Anfield, Mateo Kovačić kicks a ball at Sadio Mane’s face when he’s on the ground like a little bitch and doesn’t even get carded for it.
Liverpool Starting XI vs Chelsea
Liverpool Player Ratings vs Chelsea
Jurgen Klopp (2) –
Goes with a strong XI. Be interesting to see how he manages the subs given the congested fixture list the coming 10 days.
Aside from a good 15 or so minutes at the beginning of the match, the squad is lifeless. Even worse after the half. Klopp’s subs are wrong. At some point, you run out of excuses and just need to win. This squad is broken. Klopp is out of answers.
Alisson (6) –
Welcome back, Ali. The goal and the loss is not on him.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (5) –
Ugh. Gets caught out of position on Mount’s opener. Just not defending well. Presses ahead ok, but just not good enough.
Ozan Kabak (4) –
Texted my #ynwa thread today that “both the eyeball test and advanced stats suggest Phillips is our best defender right now.” So obviously Phillips doesn’t even make the squad today and the not-ready-for-primetime-player Kabak starts.
Loses track of Werner to allow a dangerous shot in the 11th. Almost concedes another to Werner who is ruled offside. Good block in the 38th off a Ziyech shot. Just not good enough.
Fabinho (5) –
The best CB in England is back!
Rusty. Somewhat at fault for the Mount goal.
Andy Robertson (7) –
Really battling with Reece James early. So far up he often looks more like a left wing. The best of the backs? Critical goal line clearances keeps it 1-0 and at least gives the Reds a chances. Tireless runs up the flank trying to spark the offense.
Thiago (6.5) –
Encouragingly, we’re three matches since he’s given a dumb foul away. Solid first half. Completing every pass. Winning tackles. Even winning an aerial. Subbed off late for Milner. Decent showing.
Gini Wijnaldum (6) –
Active af. Did a bit of everything. Loss not on him.
Curtis Jones (6) –
Future superstar who should be playing with confidence after his go-ahead goal this weekend. So strong and confident on ball. Nifty turns and probing passes. Subbed off by Klopp in the 62nd for Jota. Not sure I agree with this one. Jones was at least showing some desire to press forward.
Mo Salah (4) –
Struggled today. Couldn’t get much going. Had a physical match-up. Not happy to be subbed off in the 62nd minute for Ox. Don’t mind that move though, Klopp saving him for RB Leipzig.
Roberto Firmino (6) –
Worked his ass off. Strong on ball. Almost single-handedly gets Liverpool level in the 85th.
Sadio Mane (4) –
Showing a little more strength and determination than he has of late. Struggling to get the ball out of his feet for a good shot though. Bullied and beat up by Rudiger.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (4) – On for Salah at the 62nd minute mark. Literally no impact.
Diogo Jota (5) – Welcome back! Comes in the 62nd for Jones. Didn’t really get going.
James Milner (NR) – On in the 80th for Thiago.
