Liverpool Player Ratings vs Crystal Palace: Minamino, Keita Start

Posted By High Press 10 on December 19, 2020

Liverpool are right back at it, playing the early Saturday match. On Wednesday, they conquered Tottenham to go top of the  Premier League table. Today, it’s a trip to Crystal Palace.

When the Reds last played Palace after the restart, it was one of the best games they’ve played…ever. Liverpool denied Palace a touch within the box.

Something about Crystal Palace for the Reds. Not that Palace didn’t have chances, but Liverpool romp through the first half 3-0.

Second verse was same as the first. Liverpool put another 4 up, winning 7-0. Amazingly, this is Liverpool’s largest ever margin for victory in the Premier League.

Here are Liverpool player ratings vs Crystal Palace.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs Crystal Palace

Jurgen Klopp (8) –

Rotates in Minamino and Keita and benches Salah and Jones. Interesting choices to rest, as Mane has looked a little more gassed of late. However, he’s immediately rewarded for the Minamino start as Taki scores in the 3rd minute.

Can nit-pick at his subs maybe. Given the injuries on the squad, putting regular starters Salah and Jones in when comfortably up didn’t make much sense. But otherwise, he had the lads ready to play.

Alisson (7) –

Smartly comes of his line in the 18th to shut down a dangerous Palace counter. Otherwise, never really challenged.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (7.5) –

Quiet first half. Still not back in form. Better second half. Lays off a shot and instead feeds Hendo for Liverpool’s fourth. Then gets the hockey assist by spotting Salah in the channel and bombing a perfect pass to him.

Joel Matip (7) –

Another solid and confident showing. Earns an assist on Salah’s goal too.

Fabinho (7.5) –

Utterly bossing early, shutting down two dangerous attacks. Doesn’t organize as well as VVD but may actually defend on ball better.

Andy Robertson (8) –

Feels like the entire attack is going through him today. Seeing a lot of the ball. Absolutely earns his assist on the Firmino goal with a perfect ball in to Bobby. Very determined display.

The Looks Great in Training Naby Keita (6) –

Well, he’s working hard. But brain farts a pass to ruin a counter attack in the 21st minute. Couple of good dispossessions. Maybe he just needs to play the 6. Gives away a penalty with a bone-headed high-kick that leads to a shot on target for Palace.

Does set up Taki for what should’ve been Liverpool’s fifth. But he’s the lone “meh” on the day.

Gini Wijnaldum (7) –

Playing with a lot of confidence and distributing well. Typical good Gini show. Gets subbed off with 30 minutes left for some well-deserved rest.

Jordan Henderson (8.5) –

Playing with purpose. Makes an interception and almost sets Mane free with a smart ball but puts just too much on it. Playing everywhere, centrally, on the left with Robbo, on the right. So much confidence. Utterly deserves his goal. A calm and clinical one-touch curler. So good.

Takumi Minamino (7) –

Earns his start by scoring in the 3rd minute. It’s his first league goal. Well done, Taki. Gets to play all 90. Should’ve had a second goal. He can build on this.

Sadio Mane (8) –

Very lively early. Work rate and pressing is off the charts. Gets the assist on Minamino’s goal. Earns his goal with a stupid turn and finish. Wow. Gets the hockey assist on Hendo’s goal by spotting TAA and switching to him. Comes off in the 57th for Salah.

Roberto Firmino (9) –

Looks like he’s back. Link up play is strong. He’s unlocking the attack. Sets Mane up for the second goal. Unsprings the counter attack to Robbo and then finishes it with a feather touch and clinical shot to put Liverpool up 3-0. Gets a brace with a very clinical finish in the 68th minute. Subbed off for Ox.

Mo Salah (9) – Comes on in the 57th for Mane. Perfectly weighted ball into Bobby to get an assist on Liverpool’s fifth. And then gets a goal in his fifth straight match with a header in the 81st. Puts him temporarily ahead of everyone for the Golden Boot (12 total this season). AND THEN ADDS ANOTHER WITH A BRILLIANT FINISH. My lord. Whiffs of his Chelsea winner on that one.

Curtis Jones (6) – Comes on in the 69th for Gini. Some good touches but not much impact.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (NR) – Comes on in the 75th for Bobby. Welcome back, Ox!

Tough call between Henderson and Firmino. 🤔 There’s something that the Kop want you to know…
