Liverpool Player Ratings vs Manchester United: Can Reds Go Back to Top of the Table?

Posted By High Press 10 on January 17, 2021 - Last Updated on January 18, 2021

Soooo…this one is kind of a big match, isn’t it?

After years, decades practically, of being totally irrelevant, Manchester United shockingly against all logic and reason find themselves atop the Premier League table again.

Be it from injuries, bad luck, a grueling schedule, or all of the above…Liverpool have been ūüí© for the past few weeks.¬†

Can they right the ship today at Anfield against Man U?

The Reds are ping-ponging the ball around good early. They dominated the first half, holding 66% possession. Liverpool got 9 shots off but, again, they aren’t finding the target. Only 1 shot found the arms of David de Gea. Man U only managed 1 shot all half (off target).

Man U though have continued doing very well falling down calling for fouls even they’re breathed upon.¬†

In the end, Man U actually created the best scoring chances. The Reds end with another disappointing 0-0 draw. This title defense has quickly slipped away.

Here are Liverpool player ratings vs Manchester United.

Liverpool Player Starting XI vs Manchester United

Liverpool Player Ratings vs Manchester United

Manager

Jurgen Klopp () ‚Äst

Nails the starting XI, imo. Has the squad playing well but again, no end product.

Goalkeeper

Alisson () –

Never challenged until…he is! And comes up big.¬†

Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold (5) –

Just not impacting matches still yet. Some solid defending though in second half, just not launching offensively. He’s just…off. OGS definitely does well planning to shut down TAA and Robbo.¬†

Jordan Henderson (6.5) –

Having the full field in front of him, the captain is vocal in directing his squad. His soccer IQ shows at CB. In the right spots to limit big chances (until the end of the match, at least).

Fabinho (7.5) –¬†

Strong defensively, shutting everything down. Really smart tactical foul (earning a yellow) on Cavani to thwart a dangerous attack. Best CB in England.

Andy Robertson (5) –¬†

Same as with TAA. Just not getting it done offensively. Needed more today.

Midfielders

Thiago (8.5) –

If Liverpool win this match, Thiago will likely be a driving force. It’s great to see him in the starting XI. Creativity shows early on although not linking up just yet.¬†

Thiago is dominating possession for the Reds (over 10% in first half), completing dribbles, and being a creative force. Easily the Reds best player in the first 45. Gets hungry for a goal in the second half and is really the only Red who looks like winning is a priority.

Xherdan Shaqiri (7) –¬†

Like this call by Klopp a lot. Shaq has looked strong in limited minutes this season. He had two unforgettable goals against Man U two seasons ago.

Some good turns and distribution early. Subbed off for Jones, good showing.

Gini Wijnaldum (7) –

This one makes me sad. Gini will be leaving us for Barcelona in the summer. He’s started play in a spirited fashion early. Very central, seeing a lot of the ball and key in distributing.¬†

Forwards

Mo Salah (5) –

Active but dribbling into crowds instead of distributing. Shot is so far off target it’s ridiculous.¬†

Sadio Mane (5) –

AWB is shutting him down. Not having a strong impact. Poor showing.

Roberto Firmino (6) –¬†

The best of the front three in the first half. Linking up well. Shots are just off target or too weak. Needs to be sharper on finishing. Subbed off for Big Div.

Substitutions

Curtis Jones (NR) – Looks strong in his 15 minutes. Maybe should’ve come on earlier.¬†

Divock Origi (NR) РOn too late for an impact.

James Milner (NR) РOn too late for an impact.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Thiago was the only Red who put it all on the line all match. He’s awesome.¬†
