Liverpool Player Ratings vs Newcastle: Phillips, Milner Start, Thiago Returns

Posted By High Press 10 on December 30, 2020

Liverpool need to get their sh!t together.

They should be running away with the Premier League this season. They’re in first, but are dropping points too frequently. The Reds look to get back to winning today vs Newcastle

James Milner and Nat Phillips earn starts as Thiago returns to the squad (on the bench, but hey baby steps).

The first-half was pretty even. While the Reds dominated possession (73%), meaningful opportunities were fairly even. Liverpool were wasteful again in the final third. 0-0 at the half.

Second verse was same as the first. A maddening turd of a performance. 0-0. Won’t ever get those 2 hours of my life back.

Here are Liverpool player ratings vs Newcastle.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs Newcastle

Manager

Jurgen Klopp (2) –

Rotates but still keeps a very strong XI. Liverpool need the points. Needs to bring on Ox or Thiago early in the second half as the midfield isn’t generating much. Subs off our best creative mid in Jones for Gini, which was not the sub we needed. Gets Thiago on too late. And makes a sub in stoppage time when we need every second to score. What in the actual F today. Klopp needs to get the lads in better mentality and use his subs.

Goalkeeper

Alisson (7) –

Little sloppy under pressure almost giving it away in the 10th minute. Not really challenged until the 80th when he comes up with a typical Ali HUGE save.

Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold (7) –

Good defensive recoveries. Offensively tries to assert himself and take over the match towards end of regulation. Too little too late.

Nat Phillips (7) –

Well-earned spot back in the starting XI. Making presence felt on aerials early. Gets smoked by Wilson and almost concedes the opener. Otherwise is very steady. No glaring mistakes.

Fabinho (8) –

Best CB in England? Key read and deflection when Wilson gets by Phillips. Great defending. He IS the best CB in England.

Andy Robertson (6) –

Fiery today. Lots of effort with no end product.

Midfielders

James Milner (7) –

Gives Gini Wijnaldum a well-deserved breather against his old club. Zipping around like he’s 25. Taking shots, finding through balls and crosses. He’s Liverpool’s best player in the first half. Subbed off for Thiago but a good showing.

Curtis Jones (5.5) –

In-form and clearly has Klopp’s trust. Showing some creativity but not really getting it done. Subbed off in the 68th. Pretty meh showing.

Jordan Henderson (7) –

Very active. Getting more creative with his passes. Delivers a gorgeous ball to Salah that should’ve led to a Liverpool opener. Buccaneering ahead, megging fools.

Forwards

Mo Salah (5) –

Henderson delivers a dime to him in the 34th that he simply should’ve finished. AND should’ve finished the opportunity Firmino fed him in the 66th but gets no bend on it. Can’t finish a sentence today.

Sadio Mane (6) –

Just a little off today. Passing not finding mark. Touch not totally clean. Needed more from him today.

Roberto Firmino (7) –

Working hard but not creating much. That changes with a brilliant run in the 66th and feed to Salah [that Salah muffs again]. Misses a free header on goal in the 68th. Grrrrrr.

Substitutions

Gini Wijnaldum (NR) – On for Jones in the 68th.

Thiago (NR) – On for Milner in the 73rd. Pretty invisible.

Xherdan Shaqiri (NR) – On in stoppage for Salah.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Fabinho was the best player on the pitch today.
