Here we go! It’s the start of the 2021-22 Premier League season.
Liverpool travel to Carrow Road for a match against newly promoted Norwich City.
Early today, intentions were clearly stated in the Manchester United vs Leeds match. Will the Reds do the same?
Liverpool took about 20 minutes to find their stride. However, they played very well in stretches. A Diogo Jota goal puts them up 1-0 at the half.
The Reds turned up the pressure in the second half, as Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah found the back of the net. Liverpool earn a well-deserved 3-0 win to start the season.
Liverpool Player Ratings vs Norwich
Jurgen Klopp (9) –
Rolls out his 4-3-3 but with some interesting midfield selections. Like the timing of his subs, bringing two on in the 60th. Had the lads ready and made the right decisions during the match.
Alisson (9) –
Does well to save a Pukki laser in the 20th. Challenged more in the first half than he might’ve been expecting. Comes up HUGE late in the second half to keep a clean sheet.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (7) –
Touch and passing is pure class today. Gets the hockey assist on Jota’s opener. Good showing.
Virgil Van Dijk (8) –
So much for easing VVD back in the line-up. The big man gets the start. Allows the Reds to play a much higher line.
Joel Matip (8) –
Earns the start over Ibrahima Konaté. Some really deft defending in the first half. Great positional awareness. Can tell why Klopp went with him over Konate.
Kostas Tsimikas (6.5) –
Getting a chance to prove himself while Andy Robertson is out with an ankle injury. Doing a good Robbo impression as he zips up the flanks. Looks more settled in that last season. Sends a great ball into Jota in the 10th minute that almost leads to an opening goal.
Dispossessed too easily though and doesn’t gengenpress enough.
Naby Keita (7) –
Is THIS the year Keita’s training form translates to the field?
Good effort, constantly pressing. Tackling machine today. Completing over 90% of his passes too.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (6) –
Klopp must like what he sees with Ox in training. Maybe Ox can provide that scoring punch Liverpool’s midfield was lacking last season. Off in the 60th for Fabinho. Will be upset with himself for not doing more with this opportunity.
James Milner (6) –
Surprise starter in Fabinho’s spot. Doing well, making some key interceptions and just being a pest.
Sadio Mane (6) –
Quiet showing today. Really didn’t do much.
Diogo Jota (7) –
Starts at the #9 over Firmino. He’s active and going for goal. Sends a header just over the crossbar in the 11th. Gets a well-deserved opening goal in the 27th. Comes off in the 60th for Firmino.
Mo Salah (9.5) –
Rips one with his right foot on target in the 18th. Strikes a great volley that just misses. Cheeky assist on Jota’s opener. Gets the assist on Bobby’s goal as well. Salah deserves one himself today. Ends up getting it later in the match. What a display.
Fabinho (6) – On in the 60th.
Roberto Firmino (7) – On in the 60th. Almost immediately makes an impact, scoring in the 65th.
Harvey Elliott (NR) – Looked good in limited time.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Salah scores in his fifth straight season opener. A force today.
