Liverpool Player Ratings vs RB Leipzig (Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2)

Posted By High Press 10 on March 10, 2021

It’s getting more and more difficult to write anything positive about Liverpool‘s 2020-21 campaign.

So let’s just go with the following: Liverpool lead RB Leipzig 2-0 going into the second leg of their Champions League match-up. Those two goals are of the “away” variety meaning RBL has a herculean task in front of them.

But no Liverpool supporter feels good about the state of their team or status in this match-up today.

Frustrating first-half. Liverpool actually being out-possessed (41% to 59%) but have generated more shots (7, with 5 on target to RBL’s 6 / 2). 0-0 at the break.

Liverpool finally bust through in the second half as Mo Salah and Sadio Mane find their finishing form. Reds win 2-0 and advance on aggregate 4-0.

Here are Liverpool player ratings vs RB Leipzig Champions League Round of 16 Leg 2.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs RB Leipzig

Jurgen Klopp (7) –

I like seeing Fabinho back in midfield and Nat Phillips getting a start, so he gets an A+ on the line-up selection. Let’s see where they are mentally though.

First half is shaky. However, second half has a little more purpose. Liked the subs he made. Felt like he had the boys playing looser today too.

Alisson (8) –

HUGE save in the 10th minute. And again keeps bailing Liverpool out. Vintage Ali performance.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (6) –

Still a little off. Not a bad showing and was a driving force today, but he’s not totally in form yet.

Ozan Kabak (6) –

Fingers crossed that his familiarity with Leipzig from the Bundesliga pays off today.

Defending well early, some alert positioning. No glaring mistakes though not totally confident yet either.

Nat Phillips (8) –

Consistently our best “defensive” defender most of the season. Would be nice to see him get us a set piece header goal today. Something to take the pressure off. Key last man tackle. Really shining of late.

Andy Robertson (7) –

Much more well-rounded Robbo showing today. Was firing in strong crosses and make great overlaps while not losing his mark defensively.

Thiago (8) –

After a penetrating dribble, almost immediately carries on with Liverpool’s “poor final third decision making” by not striking / properly weighting a pass to Salah in the 4th minute. Brilliant ball to Salah in the 24th that Mo wastes. Goes for a bicycle kick — Thiago wants it today. Subbed off in the 71st after a great display.

Gini Wijnaldum (7) –

Gets the captain’s arm band today. Exerting himself offensively early with a clever flick to Mane. Seems to be benefitting from Fabinho being back. Hope to see more of this Gini in the coming weeks.

Fabinho (7.5) –

Back as our #6. Let’s see if this move helps unlock the offense a bit more by enabling Thiago to create. Actually Gini is doing the creating with Fab back. Always in right spot. Always in the right spot. Helping offensively and defensively.

Mo Salah (8) –

Active and hungry, but not clinical. Wastes a great breakaway chance in the 24th. After more wasted opportunities, finally finds that clinical finish in the 70th to put Liverpool up 1-0. Strong match from Mo all around.

Diogo Jota (7) –

In Bobby’s central role, linking up well. Almost puts Liverpool up 1-0 with a well-saved corner header. Assists on Salah’s goal to give Liverpool the 1-0 lead. Looked more like the September – October version of Jota today.

Sadio Mane (7) –

Fires a volley off target in the 6th minute. Later literally heads the ball directly into the ground in the 24th off a Salah deflected save. Gets a good confidence boosting goal in the 74th to officially put this one away.

Divock Origi (7) – In for Jota in the 71st. Immediate impact with an inch-perfect assist to Mane.

Naby Keita (6) – In for Thiago at the 71st. Whatever, was fine.

James Milner (NR) – On late for Gini.

Konstantinos Tsimikas (NR) – On in stoppage for Robbo.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (NR) – On in stoppage for Mane.

A few viable candidates but going with King Mo today.
