Liverpool Player Ratings vs Sheffield United (October 24, 2020)

If Wednesday’s Champions League showing vs Ajax is a sign of things to come, Liverpool will be gutting out a lot of games.

Jurgen Klopp rolls out a 4-2-3-1 today. He’s trying to keep the center of the pitch compact with extra support while adding another dynamic attacker to spur the offense. This could be interesting.

Liverpool mostly look like 💩all first half. They got screwed by VAR again on 1) a clean all ball challenge by Fabinho that was 2) outside the box, going down 1-0 on the ensuring pk. But they deserved to be down 1-0. They livened up the last 10 minutes of the first half and Roberto Firmino equalized it with a rare Anfield goal.

A well-placed Diogo Jota second half goal gives Liverpool a hard-earned 2-1 win.

Here are Liverpool player ratings vs Sheffield United for October 24, 2020.

Liverpool Player Ratings

Jurgen Klopp (6) –

Like what the skipper is rolling out for the line-up today.  This 4-2-3-1 in theory could anchor Liverpool with the defensive support it needs while getting one more legit attacker (Jota) involved.

Given the upcoming fixture list, would’ve liked to have seen his subs 1) full-used, and 2) earlier.

Alisson (6) –Welcome back, Alisson Becker! Faster than expected return to the line-up.

No shame guessing wrong on the pk. Solid save at the 24th to keep it just a one goal game.

Casualness in footwork during the 59th almost leads to a turnover and dangerous situation.

Still, a W in his return should calm all nerves.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (7) –

Still looking for his first good match of the season. Alert direct kick taking at the 3rd almost got past Ramsdale from mid-field. Looks sharper today both offensively and defensively. Awesome ball in off a creative Salah run almost leads to a chance in the 35th.

His best showing of the season but not fully back yet.

Fabinho (6) –

Best center-back in the world? Maybe!

Poor clearance leads to an unjust pk against him / Liverpool. Gets torched by Burke in the 61st that almost leads to a goal against.

Maybe not the best center-back in the world, but got the job done.

Joe Gomez (7) –

Looks good going forward and switching fields. Solid defensively on interceptions, aerials, and blocks.

Andy Robertson (6.5) –

100th appearance. Not very tidy today. Passing missing their mark. Effort there as always.

Jordan Henderson (7.5) –

We always play better with our captain in the middle. Great ball in to Mane that leads to a deflection and Firmino’s opener. More involved in the attack than would be expected. Really strong showing.

Gini Wijnaldum (6) –

Will be a deep holding mid today with Hendo.

Goes for goal in the 18th but too high. Working hard of course.

Diogo Jota (7) –

I like this move by Klopp, getting Jota on the field with the front 3 (who are mids today).

Alert and creative. Earns a well-deserved goal off a clinical header to put Liverpool ahead.

Sadio Mane (7) –

Not the best Mane showing. Delivers a laser perfect ball into Jota for an assist on the go ahead. But maybe his least electrifying match of the season.

Roberto Firmino (6.5) –

Move to more of a #10 today. Maybe this is the spark he needs.

GET. IN. THERE. Firmino on the board finally with a goal at Anfield, confidently equalizing the match. Otherwise still just a bit off.

Mo Salah (7) –

Top of the spear. Touch is sublime today. Dancing with the balls in the box non-stop. Has a worldie of a goal called offsides by the slightest of margins. Outrageous turn leads to killer attempt that hits woodwork. Deserved a goal today.

Takumi Minamio (NR) – Comes on in the 83rd for Bobby.

James Milner (NR) – Comes out to shut Sheffield down in the 83rd for Jota.

This is tough as the goal scorers weren’t superb today. Mo and Hendo were Liverpool’s best, we’ll give it to the captain.
