Liverpool Player Ratings vs Southampton: Thiago, Ox Start for Reds

Posted By High Press 10 on January 4, 2021

Liverpool travel in their hideous teal kits to Southampton in a match that well, THEY MUST WIN.

While still atop the Premier League table, the Reds are wobbly. It was so much more fun a year ago when they simply never lost. These ties and losses are annoying. Now I have sympathy for my Arsenal friends. I feel your pain.

Good news for the Reds is both Thiago and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain earn starts. Liverpool needs a spark offensively. Let’s see how that goes.

NOT GOOD!

Thiago gives a penalty away in the second minute and Danny Ings puts Southampton up early. That second minute lead holds for the rest of the match. Liverpool were pitiful in the first half. Better in the second but couldn’t find an equalizer.

Southampton wins 1-0.

Liverpool are the new Arsenal.

Here are Liverpool player ratings vs Southampton.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs Newcastle

Manager

Jurgen Klopp (4) –

Klopp identifies that Liverpool need some offensive spark, so starting Thiago and Ox is a good sign. Hendo at CB an interesting call. Typically when Klopp does this types of line-ups, the Reds explode.

Not today!

Klopp needs to figure this out. Just doesn’t have the lads ready.

Goalkeeper

Alisson (5) –

Simply caught on the opener, nothing he could do. Some sloppy distribution.

Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold (3) –

Loses Danny Ings, the one person the Reds need to mark, on the opener. Very ppor overall. Needs to be subbed off. Yanked in the 78th for Milly. Gave the ball away 38 times tonight. WTF.

Jordan Henderson (7) –

An interesting selection at center-back, especially with Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams fit and available. Probably the best of the backline in the first half, although that’s not saying much.

Fabinho (6) –

Worst display in CB since being moved back there.

Andy Robertson (6) –

Exerted himself in the final 20 or so minutes, but too little too late.

Midfielders

Thiago (7) –

Noice. Welcome back.

Ugh. Gives away the penalty that leads to Southampton’s opener. However, playing well and active otherwise. Probably Liverpool’s “best” in the first half. Maintained that same level in the second half but couldn’t create that one big chance.

Alex Oxlade-Chamblain (4) –

NOICE. Welcome back too.

Wait, is Ox playing? Totally quiet first half. Subbed off in the 57th. No impact.

Gini Wijnaldum (5) –

Seems a bit labored when on ball today. Some decent turns and runs but not his best.

Forwards

Mo Salah (6) –

Just not doing anything. Almost gets the Reds on the board at the end of first half stoppage but narrowly misses a header. Seems back off form again.

Sadio Mane (7) –

Along with Thiago, the only Red showing any interest in playing well in the first half. Creates an opportunity for Salah to head one in during first half stoppage. Really asserting self in second half. Great movement. One of few bright spots.

Roberto Firmino (5.5) –

Not involved offensively at all. Picks up work rate significantly in second half. Crafty on ball.

Substitutions

Xherdan Shaqiri (5) – On for Ox. Need him to prove something today. Worked hard but not producing any chances.

James Milner (NR) – Happy 35th birthday, Milly! Comes on for TAA. Gets taken down hard but put in good work.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Mane and Thiago were the only two Reds who showed. Awful team effort. No MotM today.
