Liverpool Player Ratings vs Wolves: Jota Doesn’t Start with Crowd Back at Anfield

Anfield welcomes fans back on the grounds today, as Liverpool face Wolves

With Spurs romping Arsenal, Liverpool need a W to stay tops in the Premier League

Surprisingly, in form Diogo Jota doesn’t start against his old team. However, he’ll for sure find his way to the field at some point. Trent Alexandar-Arnold is back on the bench as well.

Oh, that singing of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at Anfield ❤❤❤.

While Liverpool dominate possession, it’s a fairly even first half. Mo Salah’s clinical goal give the Reds a 1-0 lead after the first 45.

Liverpool steamed-rolled the second half with goals from Gini Wijnaldum, Joel Matip, and Sadio Mane (though ruled an OG). In front of a lively Kop, the Reds rule 4-0.

Here are Liverpool player ratings vs Wolves.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs Leicester

Manager

Jurgen Klopp (8) –

He’s figuring it out. The rotations and subbing was on point. Klopp has a forgiving December fixture list compared to some others. The Reds could be 6-8 points atop the table come the New Year.

Goalkeeper

Caoimhín Kelleher (8) –

Now the second choice keeper over Adrian. Is confident between the sticks. Very poised. Makes a couple of great stops and never nervous in distribution.

Defenders

Neco Williams (6) –

Coming off a good showing. However, earns a dangerous yellow early that fortunately doesn’t harm the Reds. Grows into game well after that.

Joel Matip (8) –

Another strong display defensively. Buries a header to put Liverpool up 3-0. Looking like he’s rediscovered his September 2019 form.

Fabinho (7) –

Plastic-manning all over the place. A little difficulty with Adama Traore early but otherwise a great showing.

Andy Robertson (7) –

Typically ambitious going forward although not terribly effective. Put the work in and looked like he covered more ground than anyone 2x.

Midfielders

Curtis Jones (6) –

Playing with loads of confidence. One badass strike in the 74th on his weak foot. Otherwise, not a ton of impact but not poor either.

Gini Wijnaldum (8) –

Working his ass off again. Earns a well-deserved goal on a wicked strike in the 58th to put Liverpool up 2-0. Very solid Gini game.

Jordan Henderson (7.5) –

Best thing he did all first-half is yelling at the lame Wolves’ flopper (and former Liverpool academy product) Conner Coady for faking contact with Mane. Grinding hard. Organizing. Assists on the Gini goal. The Reds are simply better when he’s on the pitch.

Forwards

Mo Salah (8) –

A little sloppy on his touch. But hungry for goals. Scores a proper striker goal though to put Liverpool up 1-0. Fires off a free-kick from long range that’s easily saved in the 35th. Laser-perfect pass to Matip’s head to earn an assist.

Sadio Mane (6) –

Active and aggressive going forward. Not much to show for it today, though should’ve / could’ve gotten credit on the OG.

Roberto Firmino (6) –

Gets the start over Jota. Work rate fantastic. But no shots on goal. Off for Jota.

Substitutions

Trent Alexander-Arnold (6) – Welcome back, Trent! Gets a complimentary assist sort of on the own goal at 4-0.

Diogo Jota (NR) – Comes on in the 73rd for Bobby. Why didn’t he start? Vying to become only the 4th player to score an EPL goal in his first 5 home appearances.

Naby Keita (NR) – Comes on late for Hendo. Whatever.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Mo Salah didn’t always look like the best player on the pitch today, but he was the most productive.
