Lyon vs PSG Betting Preview: Odds, Team News, Lineups and Tips

Written By Alex Blowers on January 7, 2022

Ligue 1 resumes this weekend after breaking for the festive period. The marquee fixture sees French soccer’s former dominant club Lyon take on the imperious PSG. Mauricio Pochettino‘s side sits 13 points clear at the top of the table, while Peter Bosz‘s side struggles in the bottom half of the table.

The game is scheduled to kick off Sunday at 2:45 PM EST and will be shown live from the Groupama Stadium on beIN Sports.

Out: Jeff Reine-Adelaide (ACL), Tino Kadewere (Africa Cup of Nations), Islam Slimani (Africa Cup of Nations), Karl Toko Ekambi (Africa Cup of Nations)
Doubtful: Jason Denayer (Match Fitness), Sinaly Diomandé (Match Fitness), Lucas Paquetá (Covid-19)
Suspended: None
Coach: Peter Bosz

Lyon have a few players missing due to injury, Covid-19, and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Lucas Paquetá‘s absence should allow Xherdan Shaqiri to impress. The summer signing has only managed eight starts this season.

Midfielder Bruno Guimarães has been linked with a move to Premier League side Everton. He started on the bench in Lyon’s final game of 2021 and could replace Thiago Mendes or Maxence Caqueret in central midfield.

Up top, Bosz will persevere with Moussa Dembélé in the hope he can rediscover his goalscoring form. The 25-year-old managed 31 goals in his first 60 Ligue 1 appearances but has only found the back of the net five times in his last 27 games.

PSG could be missing up to nine players due to injury, Covid-19, and AFCON commitments. That would cause issues for most sides, but the Parisian’s squad is so deep that it doesn’t prevent them from fielding a strong eleven.

Mauro Icardi will continue to fill in for Neymar, who is still recovering from the ankle injury he picked up in late November. After picking up five yellow cards, Kylian Mbappé was suspended for their final Ligue 1 game of 2021. Poch will restore him to the lineup with Lionel Messi on the opposite flank.

I think we will see the trio Leandro Paredes, Marco Verratti, and Ander Herrera in midfield. Summer signing Giorginio Wijnaldum‘s future is unclear. After speaking out about his lack of minutes, the Dutch international has been linked with a return to his former club Newcastle United.

Sergio Ramos is available after serving a one-match suspension for getting sent off in the 1-1 draw with Lorient. Colin Dagba should get a run of games with Achraf Hakimi representing Morocco at AFCON.

Gianluigi Donnarumma‘s positive Covid test means Keylor Navas wins this round of guess the starting goalkeeper.

If there’s one thing 2021 should have taught me, it’s that PSG can’t be trusted. I’ve only hit seven of my 18 bets for them this season as they flatter to deceive in Ligue 1 with late goals and individual quality bailing them out.

2022 is a new year, and with the UEFA Champions League Knockout Stage just over five weeks away, I think we will see Poch’s side start to ramp up their intensity. Back them to kick 2022 off with three points and combine Over 1.5 Goals to boost the odds. Lyon’s last five matches have averaged 2.2 and PSG’s 3.2 goals per game.

BETTING TIP: Parlay PSG To Win and Over 1.5 Goals +110
