Mauricio Pochettino Next Bayern Munich Coach? Oddsmakers Say Yes. We Say Look Elsewhere.

The English soccer manager game of musical chairs has stopped on Tottenham. Jose Mourinho somehow slid his butt into the seat. The music is ready to start again.

So where will Spurs’ sacked manager Mauricio Pochettino go next? Oddsmakers view Bayern Munich as the favorite to land the sure-to-be-in-demand Argentine.

Odds on where Mauricio Pochettino manages next

Pulling odds from various sites, here’s the consensus.

Bayern Munich+150
Manchester United+200
Real Madrid+500
Barcelona +800

With Niko Kovac recently gone, Bayern makes sense. However, how good is Poch’s German? That’s a supposed requirement of the club.

According to ESPN’s Mark Ogden, there may be an agreement between Spurs and Poch that he cannot accept a Premier League job until after this season.  If that’s the case, Manchester United and Arsenal will both have to wait.

If Pochettino were to accept a job this season, the club that has the most potential for change is Barcelona. Pairing Poch with fellow Argentine Lionel Messi for the sunset years of his career feels right.

Here are the most likely scenarios then:

  • If there is a Premier League freeze out clause for this season, keep an eye on Barcelona.
  • If there is no EPL clause, Manchester United is the choice. There’s at least the appearance of ambition to spend on players. Arsenal in recent years mirrors the same frustration Pochettino had with Tottenham. Plus, there’s a poetic justice with Poch going to Mourinho’s old club.
  • And if you want a darkhorse candidate, monitor Everton. Marco Silva’s seat will be hot all season long if the Toffees continue to be treading water around the relegation zone. The squad has talent and they’re willing to spend.
