Premier League Betting 21/22: Arsenal vs Manchester City Betting Preview

Written By Alex Blowers on December 31, 2021

The first Premier League game of 2022 sees Top 4 chasers Arsenal face off against table-toppers Manchester City. Pep Guardiola‘s side recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory earlier in the season thanks to Granit Xhaka‘s first-half red card. The Gunners have improved over the last few months and want to show everyone they can compete with the league’s best.

They will have to do it without their manager Mikel Arteta who is isolating after testing positive for Covid.

The game is scheduled to kick off Saturday at 7:30 AM EST and will be shown live on USA from The Emirates.

Premier League Betting: Arsenal vs Manchester City Betting Preview

Out: Sead Kolašinac (Ankle), Calum Chambers (Covid), Cedric Soares (Covid), Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Covid), Takehiro Tomiyasu (Covid), Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang (Dropped From Squad)
Doubtful: None
Suspended: None
Coach: Mikel Arteta

Arteta has found a winning formula and will continue with the starting lineup that has been victorious in their last four Premier League games.

Takehiro Tomiyasu‘s positive Covid test means Benjamin White will deputize at right-back, with Rob Holding continuing at center-back. The former Bolton Wanderers player has opened up in the past about issues with mental health and self-confidence due to hair loss. The star is unrecognizable after undergoing a hair transplant procedure, and his confidence has returned on the pitch.

Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang isn’t expected to be recalled, and I think we’ll see him leave in the January Transfer Window. Check out my Newcastle: Who We Could Sign in January post to see my take on his chances of moving to Tyneside.

Emile Smith Rowe is building himself a super-sub reputation. The 21-year-old has scored from the bench in The Gunners’ last three matches, and we will see Arteta introduce him in the second half. Martin Ødegaard is starting to replicate his Real Sociedad form that lit up LaLiga in 2019/20. The young Norwegian has scored three goals and provided three assists in his last seven games.

Alexandre Lacazette has also rediscovered his form scoring two goals and laying on three assists in his last four appearances. The Frenchman has six months left on his contract and can start negotiating with clubs in January. If he keeps this form up, Arsenal might try to resign him.

Premier League Betting: Arsenal vs Manchester City Betting Preview

Out: Benjamin Mendy (Police Investigation), Liam Delap (Ankle)
Doubtful: Kyle Walker (Match Fitness), Rodri (Match Fitness), John Stones (Undisclosed)
Suspended: None
Coach: Pep Guardiola

With question marks over Kyle Walker and John Stones‘ availability, we will see Aymeric Laporte, Rúben Dias, and João Cancelo make their third appearance in six days. Oleksandr Zinchenko will come in at left-back for Nathan Aké.

Rodri‘s fitness issues have led to Fernandinho anchoring City’s midfield in their last two games. At 36-years-old I think he will be rested for this fixture, and we will see Ilkay Gündogan, Bernardo Silva, and Kevin De Bruyne make up the midfield three.

Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez will come in for Jack Grealish and Gabriel Jesus up top. Phil Foden has impressed as a false nine this season, and I think Pep will use him in this role.

Arsenal have come up short against the league’s best, and I think this match will be another reality check for the North London side and their fans. Back City to win this game comfortably by two or three goals.
