Premier League Betting 21/22: Brentford vs Manchester City Betting Preview

Written By Alex Blowers on December 28, 2021

Premier League leaders Manchester City close out 2021 with a trip to Brentford, who have had their excellent start to the season derailed by injury.

In their opening seven games, the Bees picked up 11 points, conceding just six goals. But injuries to key players have disrupted their form leading to eight points in their last ten matches, conceding 16 goals.

Thomas Frank’s side are nine points off the bottom three, so there’s no need to panic just yet. They need to address their defensive issues and start picking up points again or risk being sucked into the relegation battle.

The game is scheduled to kick off Thursday at 12:15 PM EST and will be shown live on NBCSN from the Brentford Community Stadium.

Bryan Mbeumo picked up a calf injury in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Brighton. Yoane Wissa replaced him and will be handed his second start of the season, supporting Ivan Toney in attack.

Frank Onyeka replaced Mathias Jensen at halftime and will be hoping he did enough to win his place back in the starting lineup.

Out: Ferran Torres (Foot), Benjamin Mendy (Police Investigation), Liam Delap (Ankle)
Doubtful: Kyle Walker (Match Fitness), Rodri (Match Fitness), John Stones (Undisclosed)

Coach: Pep Guardiola

With this being City’s second game of three across six days, I think we will see Pep Guardiola rotate his squad. Phil Foden and Jack Grealish will return to the starting lineup after being left out of the last two for celebrating the 7-0 victory over Leeds United at a Manchester bar.

I think Bernardo Silva will come in for Kevin De Bruyne, who has spoken recently of his struggles with long Covid, saying, “I still feel sometimes that my body is adapting because I do two or three sprints and feel it, having had Covid.”

John Stones was left out of Sunday’s 6-3 win over Leicester City due to an undisclosed injury. In central defense, Nathan Aké could come in for Aymeric Laporte or Rúben Dias.

Ferran Torres’ move is all but finalized with the Spanish forward in Barcelona to complete the move. The deal has been held up by bureaucratic issues, most likely because Monday and Tuesday are bank holidays in England, and we might not get confirmation until Wednesday.

Manchester City are flying right now and should easily pick up another three points against this struggling Brentford side. I’m repeating Sunday’s bet against Leicester and backing Guardiola’s side to score goals and dominate proceedings from the off.

With this being my last Premier League featured match of 2021, I’m going to include a player prop. Gabriel Jesus is sitting top of Manchester City’s assists chart with seven, but seven of his teammates have shorter odds. He represents the best value at +300 and is fully rested after watching the 6-3 win on Boxing Day from the bench.
