Premier League Betting 21/22: Liverpool vs Manchester City Match Preview

Written By Alex Blowers on October 1, 2021

This Sunday, Manchester City travels to Anfield to take on Liverpool for what has become the biggest Premier League fixture in recent history. These two are big favorites for the title, and hopefully, we’re in for a brilliant game. It will be shown live on NBCSN, with kick-off scheduled for 11:30AM EST.

Both sides are coming off good performances in the UEFA Champions League but with very different results. Liverpool had a fruitful trip to Portugal beating Porto 5-1. Manchester City were the better side against PSG but returned from Paris empty-handed after Idrissa Gueye and some Lionel Messi magic condemned them to a 2-0 defeat.

Read on for my match preview, bringing you all the latest team news, recent form, and stats to help you make better Premier League betting choices.

Premier League Betting: Liverpool vs Manchester City Match Preview

Out: Harvey Elliot (Ankle), Thiago Alcantara (Calf), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Groin)
Doubtful: None
Suspended: None
Coach: Jurgen Klopp

Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up a groin injury in training on Monday. It’s almost certain he will miss this game after Gareth Southgate omitted from his England squad for the upcoming international break. James Milner filled in at right-back against Porto midweek and is likely to continue although Joe Gomez could get the nod.

Harvey Elliot could return later this season after surgery on his dislocated ankle was a success. The Liverpool medical team have refused to set a specific timeframe to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on his recovery.

Curtis Jones has been the player to benefit, starting Liverpool’s last three games. The 20-year-old has been in impressive form and should keep his place in midfield alongside Fabinho and Jordan Henderson. It’s possible Jurgen Klopp could decide to go with experience and select Naby Keita or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain instead.

Up top, it looks like Klopp has settled on Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah, and Diogo Jota for his front three. I wouldn’t be surprised if Roberto Firmino started this game for his ability to press City’s defenders and drop between the lines as a False Nine.

Premier League Betting: Liverpool vs Manchester City Match Preview

Out: Ilkay Gündogan (Thigh)
Doubtful: Oleksandr Zinchenko (Unknown), Rodri (Knock)
Suspended: Benjamin Mendy (Police Investigation)
Coach: Pep Guardiola

John Stones was fit enough for the bench midweek and I think Pep Guardiola will restore him to the starting lineup alongside Ruben Dias. These two were the best center-back partnership in the Premier League last season helping City to 19 clean sheets.

With Ilkay Gündogan struggling to overcome the thigh injury he picked up against Southampton. Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, and Bernardo Silva will continue in central midfield.

In the front three, I think Pep will select the same combination that helped City to a 1-0 win over Chelsea last weekend. Jack Grealish, Gabriel Jesus, and Phil Foden all played well and can cause Liverpool similar problems.

This is such a difficult tie to call due to the quality of the two sides. Liverpool’s squad is back to full strength and are leading the Premier League goalscoring charts with 15. Manchester City are looking solid defensively conceding one goal on the opening day of the season and keeping five cleansheets since then.

With both sides in such good form I think they will cancel each other out so I’m going to go for Under 2.5 Goals. This bet cashed for me last weekend for Chelsea vs. City and I think it will hit here.
