Premier League Betting 21/22: Manchester City vs Chelsea Betting Preview

Written By Alex Blowers on January 13, 2022

This weekend’s marquee Premier League fixture is between the top two, Manchester City and Chelsea. Since Thomas Tuchel took over at Stamford Bridge, he has gotten the better of Pep Guardiola, beating him three times out of four, including last season’s UEFA Champions League final.

Rumor has it Chelsea’s fans will take UEFA Champions League trophy balloons to The Etihad. I love The Blues fan’s dedication to shithousery here, and it will make for an excellent atmosphere in the stands.

For those of you new to the term shithousery, Urban Dictionary defines it as a “Chiefly British term for underhanded conduct or gamesmanship in a sport, with the intention of gaining an advantage. Typically refers to association football.”

A great example of it on the pitch is Jamie Vardy’s goal celebration in front of Crystal Palace’s fans. He sprinted over to them, flapping his arms like a bird to mimick an eagle.

The most important thing is what happens on the pitch. A victory for Manchester City will increase their lead to 13 points over Chelsea with 16 games left. With Southampton, Brentford, and Norwich City up next for Guardiola’s side, their rivals might not see them drop points again till late February when they face Tottenham.

A win for Tuchel’s side will cut City’s lead to seven breathing life back into the title race we all want to see. With Brighton and Tottenham up next, it might be Liverpool who profits. Jürgen Klopp’s side faces Brentford, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Burnley, and Norwich City. Fifteen points from these five matches will have City feeling the heat.

Doubtful: John Stones (Match Fitness), Fernandinho (Covid-19), Jack Grealish (Covid-19), Raheem Sterling (Covid-19)
Suspended: Benjamin Mendy (Police Investigation)
Coach: Pep Guardiola

Covid and international commitments have Guardiola’s side looking short up top. Against Swindon Town in the FA Cup, Cole Palmer impressed in the 4-1 win with a goal and an assist. The youngster will drop to the bench for Phil Foden, and Bernardo Silva will continue in the central attacking position.

Pep has his strongest players available in midfield and defense and will select them.

Coach: Thomas Tuchel

Kepa has played well in his two matches, standing in for first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The $96 million man has kept clean sheets in both and will be full of confidence for this crunch game. He’s maturing into a player Tuchel can depend on.

In recent weeks, Christian Pulišić has been used at right wing-back due to Chelsea’s injury problems at that position. I think Tuchel will play captain César Azpilicueta with Marcos Alonso on the opposite flank. In central midfield, it will be Jorginho and N’Golo Kanté, with Mateo Kovačić missing out.

Romelu Lukaku has made amends for his Sky Italia interview and is back in Tuchel’s good books. I think he will lead the line with Kai Havertz and Mason Mount playing in behind.

In my opinion, Manchester City aren’t as big a favorite as what the Moneyline reflects. I think Chelsea are through their bad patch and are on their way to being in a good moment. The Lukaku issue has been quashed, Jorginho, Kanté, and Kovačić are returning to full fitness, and they’ve just reached the Carabao Cup final, which will be a massive confidence boost for the squad.

On the other hand, Manchester City are dealing with a Covid-19 outbreak in which Guardiola tested positive and was forced to miss the Swindon Town match. Disruption to their training schedule, preparation, and staff missing could have a negative effect on them.

The value is in Chelsea getting something from this game. I’m backing them in the Double Chance market to reignite the title race.
