Premier League Betting 21/22: Manchester United vs Manchester City Betting Preview

Written By Alex Blowers on November 5, 2021

This Saturday, Manchester United hosts their local rivals Manchester City in what could be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s final match in charge. Performances have been declining recently, and their last home game ended in total embarrassment. United’s biggest rivals Liverpool smashed them 5-0, and the fans walked out in their thousands after 60 minutes. A similar outcome in this game, and Old Trafford will turn on their manager calling for his head.

The game is scheduled to kickoff at 8:30AM EST and will be shown live on NBCSN. If you’re going to watch one game this weekend, I highly recommend it’s this one.

Premier League Betting: Manchester United vs Manchester City Preview

Out: Raphael Varane (Hamstring)
Doubtful: Victor Lindelöf (Knock)
Suspended: Paul Pogba
Coach: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Last season, United held Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea twice to 0-0 draws. If I was Ole, I would bench Cristiano Ronaldo, switch back to a 4-2-3-1 formation, and play on the counter using Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, and Jadon Sancho‘s pace. That’s not going to happen.

United will continue with the 3-5-2 formation they used against Tottenham and Atalanta. Victor Lindelöf is a doubt after picking up a knock in training. His absence would force Ole to revert to a back four now Raphaël Varane is out for the next month with a hamstring injury. However, with his job on the line, Ole will risk starting him, and Lindelöf has been named in the Sweden squad for the upcoming international break.

Fred and Scott McTominay will sit in front of the back three and congest the center of the pitch. Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be on the teamsheet as wing-backs, but they won’t be venturing forward. City are great at getting to the byline from wide positions for cut-backs. Ole will instruct them to sit deep and restrict the space on the wings.

Edinson Cavani will partner Ronaldo up top. These two worked well last weekend against Spurs, with the Uruguayan international taking on the pressing responsibility.

Premier League Betting: Manchester United vs Manchester City Preview

Out: Ferran Torres (Fractured Foot)
Doubtful: None
Suspended: Aymeric Laporte
Coach: Pep Guardiola

City’s squad is almost at full strength, allowing Pep Guardiola to select his usual 4-3-3 formation. Ferran Torres is the only long-term injury after fracturing his foot while on international duty with Spain. Aymeric Laporte is serving a one-match suspension for bringing down Wilfred Zaha last weekend.

That will hand John Stones an opportunity to earn his starting spot back. The England international has been restricted to four appearances this season due to Laporte’s outstanding form. With United sitting deep, City will need Kevin De Bruyne‘s passing ability and creativity and Ilkay’s Gündogan‘s perfectly timed runs into the box to break them down.

Phi Foden will play as a false nine and operate as the focal point in City’s attack. Gabriel Jesus continues to impress as he transitions from a striker to a winger. His motivation for this change is to break into Brazil‘s starting eleven.

If you’ve been listening to the High Press Pod, you’ll know I predicted Liverpool would beat United comfortably, Ole would keep his job after that defeat, the board wouldn’t appoint Antonio Conte, and Ole would go after the City game.

I am one step away from a perfect prediction, and City needs to win this by at least two goals to end Ole’s reign.
