Premier League Betting 21/22: Matchday 01 Lines For Opening Weekend

Posted By Alex Blowers on August 10, 2021

The 2021-22 Premier League season kicks off Friday night with newly-promoted Brentford hosting Arsenal. There will be 9 more games across this opening weekend with the highlight, Manchester City traveling to North London to face Tottenham.

Here’s a look at some top recent stories from the summer as well as matchday 1 lines.

HARRY KANE WANTS OUT

All summer, Harry Kane has been linked with a move to the reigning champions. He employs his brother Charlie Kane as his agent, and they believed a gentleman’s agreement with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy would be enough to facilitate the move.

Harry’s still at Spurs, and reports emerged last week that he failed to turn up for pre-season and was refusing to train in an effort to push the transfer through. The England captain released a statement denying those claims, and he only has himself to blame for being in this situation.

It’s nice he trusts his brother enough to manage his career and contract negotiations, but what experience does he have? Jack Grealish employs Johnathan Barnett as his agent, one of the most powerful in the game. They inserted a $139 million release clause for a club playing in the Champions League, and it made Grealish’s move to Manchester City so much smoother.

New Tottenham boss Nuno Esperito Santo said that Kane is available to face Manchester City in a recent interview. It will be fascinating to see how he handles the situation and what kind of performance he puts in.

LEICESTER CITY WIN THE COMMUNITY SHIELD

This game looked destined for penalties until Nathan Aké took down Kelechi Iheancho in the final minutes. Iheanacho kept his cool and slotted past Zack Steffan to win Leicester City the Community Shield for the second time in the clubs’ history.

In the last 21 years, The Foxes have won every domestic competition in England; the League Cup (1998-99), Premier League (2015-16), FA Cup (2020-21), and Community Shield (2021). That’s a phenomenal achievement for a club of their size in the age of the Big 6 and billionaire owners.

PREMIER LEAGUE MATCHDAY 01 ODDS & ENDS

  • The opening weekend is always tough, and England’s run to the Euro 2020 final has made it even more difficult this season. A lot of players are only just returning to pre-season and won’t be up to full fitness for a few weeks. My advice is to bet low to see what kind of form teams are in and if any trends appear.
  • I like Leeds United or the Draw at +160. Marcelo Bielsa‘s side shouldn’t be underestimated and will get something from this game if Manchester United fails to turn up.
  • Arsenal and Liverpool should be able to beat newly-promoted sides Brentford and Norwich. Parlay them on the Moneyline for a nice +143 payday.
  • Back Chelsea -1.5 Goals on the Spread at -145. I think Crystal Palace are going to struggle under Patrick Viera, and it will be a comfortable win for Thomas Tuchel and his side.
