NEWCASTLE APPOINT EDDIE HOWE

After nearly a month of searching, Newcastle have finally chosen their man. Eddie Howe has been handed a two-and-a-half-year contract and, for the short term, is a very good appointment. It’s clear the new owners have a lot to learn about how the world of football works and need guidance with rebuilding the club’s infrastructure. Howe can help them with both.

A lot of people will remember him for his final season at Bournemouth when they were relegated. Overall he did a remarkable job across his two spells at the club, taking them from the brink of bankruptcy in League Two up to the Premier League and keeping them there for five seasons on a limited budget.

Former owner Mike Ashley’s austerity means Newcastle has a reported $270 million transfer budget to spend in January. It will be interesting to see the type of player they choose to strengthen with. There are question marks about Howe’s judgment in the transfer market after spending $43 million on Dominik Solanke and Jordan Ibe. However, Solanke has found his feet this season, scoring 13 goals in 17 appearances, with Bournemouth sitting top of the Championship.

STEVEN GERRARD RETURNS TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE

Steven Gerrard has decided it’s time for him to manage in the Premier League and signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Aston Villa. He has been in charge of Rangers since June 2018 and led the club to the Scottish Premiership title last season, ending Celtic’s nine-year reign as champions.

I think it’s a good appointment all around. Gerrard gets to cut his teeth in the Premier League with a squad that has the potential to qualify for Europe. Villa gets an exciting and up-and-coming manager who can build on Dean Smith’s good work and take them to the next level.

Looking at their upcoming fixtures, Matchday 16 is the one we’re all excited for. Gerrard takes his new club to Anfield in what will be his first-ever competitive game against Liverpool. I’m sure he will get a warm welcome from the supporters who see him as Jurgen Klopp’s natural successor when he decides to end his time at the club.

PREMIER LEAGUE BETTING ANALYSIS AND TIPS

  • Watford have failed to score in seven of their games this season, and I think Manchester United will get their third clean sheet of the season at Vicarage Road despite their recent defensive issues. We have three betting options: Both Teams To Score NO at +105 and Watford Team Goals Under 0.5 at +135. I’m recommending you back Manchester United to Win in Shutout at +155. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side have the individual quality to get the three points.
  • Crystal Palace’s Moneyline at +160 is really good value. Patrick Vieira is doing a great job at Selhurst Park, transforming them into a possession-based side, and they will see the majority of the ball in this game. Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher are in brilliant form and will find a way to break Burnley down.
