Premier League Betting 21/22: Matchday 19 Lines, Analysis and Tips

Written By Alex Blowers on December 22, 2021

Despite six fixtures being called off last weekend due to several Covid outbreaks and positive tests amongst players and staff rising from 42 to 90, the Premier League has decided the show must go on.

I expected a circuit breaker to be announced or, at the minimum, a return to games behind closed doors after Monday’s Premier League shareholders’ meeting. But it was decided that fixtures would continue “where safely possible,” and fans can continue attending games if they complete a few extra steps.

Hopefully, these measures are enough to ensure the safety of players, staff, and fans and maintain the sporting integrity of the competition. Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea are pushing each other at the top of the table, and it would be a real shame if Covid outbreaks and fixture pile-ups scuppered this title race.

Tottenham and Liverpool played out one of the games of the season, but all the talk was about referee Paul Tierney.

Twenty minutes into the game, Harry Kane lunged dangerously on Andrew Robertson with his studs high and should have been sent off. Tierney was lenient on the England captain deciding to book him instead and failed to consult VAR.

On 37 minutes, Emerson Royal clattered into the back of Diogo Jota in what was a stonewall penalty. Tierney waved away the protests and told Jürgen Klopp later he didn’t give a penalty because Jota attempted to buy the foul by stopping when the challenge was coming. Why wasn’t Jota booked then for unsportsmanlike conduct?

It seems like these mistakes are occurring week in week out, and it’s becoming a bit of a farce. The Premier League needs to look at what they can do to improve the level of officiating and consult with other leagues who aren’t seeing the same level of mistakes.

  • I’m all for people locking in their bets early to get the best price, but that’s potentially the worst thing you can do in the current climate. Of the four matches that went ahead last weekend, Chelsea could only name four outfield players on their bench, and Liverpool and Tottenham were both missing key players.
  • The best thing to do is wait till an hour before kickoff when the lineups are released to decide if you want to place your bet. Keep a close eye on each side’s team news, and if a star player is ruled out, you might be able to place a bet before the Sportsbooks can readjust their lines.
  • I think Everton’s Moneyline at +205 is really good value. Their game and their opponent Burnley’s game was called due to Covid outbreaks at Leicester City’s and Watford’s camps, not theirs. Rafa Benítez is very good at preparing his teams, and the extra time on the training pitch will help The Toffees collect three points.
  • Tottenham and West Ham have home advantage, and I like the idea of Parlaying their Moneylines at +207. Southampton haven’t won since November 5th, and Crystal Palace last won away from home on November 6th.
