Premier League Betting 21/22: Newcastle vs Tottenham Betting Preview

Written By Alex Blowers on October 12, 2021

This Sunday, Tottenham travels to St James Park to face Newcastle, the richest club in the world. The Toon Army are now backed by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund who have a reported wealth of $434 billion.

Newcastle’s owners have already released a statement declaring their intentions to qualify for the UEFA Champions League and win trophies. With the right transfer signings and manager, we could see them leapfrog Tottenham in three or four seasons. The game will be shown live on NBCSN, with kick-off scheduled for 11:30AM EST.

Premier League Betting: Newcastle vs Tottenham Betting Preview

Out: Paul Dummett (Calf), Freddie Woodman (Hip)
Doubtful: Joe Willock (Hip), Martin Dúbravka (Foot)
Suspended: None
Coach: Steve Bruce

Steve Bruce is expected to be sacked in the coming days by the new owners. It’s difficult to know who will play and in what formation without being certain who will be in charge. Callum Wilson, Jamaal Lascelles, and Jonjo Shelvey are all expected to return to the starting lineup after overcoming their injuries.

Allan Saint-Maximin has been leading the line in Wilson’s absence, and I think we will see these two play up top together. They started the first three games of the season together and managed two goals and one assist between them.

The smart choice for this game is to play three at the back. Tottenham are strongest on the counter, with Harry Kane dropping deep to pick up the ball to release Lucas Moura and Heung-Min Son, who run in behind. A deep defensive line will reduce the space they have to attack and force Spurs to break them down.

Out: Ryan Sessegnon (Knock)
Doubtful: Steve Bergwijn (Foot), Ben Davies (Illness)
Suspended: None
Coach: Nuno Espírito Santo

I think we will see the same players and formation that beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Matchday 07 start this game. That victory snapped Tottenham’s three-game losing streak and relieved some of the pressure on Nuno Espírito Santo going into the international break.

It looks like the Spurs manager has settled on Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg as his central midfield two. Skipp is an academy graduate who José Mourinho hailed as a future captain of the club.

We’re two months into the season, and Harry Kane has failed to score a goal or provide an assist in the Premier League. He has scored four goals in cup competitions, but questions will still be asked about the effect of his failed move to Manchester City.

What a week it’s been for Newcastle fans. Mike Ashley has sold the club, Steve Bruce looks to be on his way out, and they’re now the wealthiest football club in the world. St James Park will be sold out and rocking on Sunday with fans celebrating the first game of their new era.

With so much positive energy around the club, it’s easy to think it will transfer into the players and inspire them to a great performance, but I have my reservations. This is still the same group of players who sit in 19th on 3 points and are yet to win a game this season.

Looking at the current squad, who will still be there in two seasons? Allan Saint-Maximin, Jamaal Lascelles, Joe Willock, Martin Dúbravka, and Jamal Lewis have the best chance. Miguel Almirón and Sean Longstaff maybe. For the rest of the players, this takeover is the beginning of the end for their Newcastle careers, and it’s difficult to know they will respond.

My bet recommendation is to back Tottenham to get the 3 points. +110 is a great price, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this line shortened in the next few days.
