Premier League January Transfer News and Rumors

Posted By Alex Blowers on January 4, 2021 - Last Updated on January 24, 2021

The January Transfer Window is open & the big question is how active will clubs be?

There are a lot of factors that will impact business. Every club has seen a downturn in financial revenue due to the pandemic. The mutant strain of COVID-19 has sent positive cases skyrocketing in recent weeks. The majority of the country is in lockdown & players with families will be hesitant to make the move.

Brexit is official & the U.K has left the European Union. One change already taking effect is clubs can’t sign players under the age of 18 from mainland Europe. Sam Allardyce has complained about the impact working permits are having on his transfer plans. “The new regulations are a problem. I have found three players already who were capable of coming here and they’re not allowed. It’s a shame,”

This hasn’t stopped the papers or social media with numerous rumors circulating & below is my take on the biggest ones.

JANUARY TRANSFER RUMORS

Martin Odegaard to join Arsenal on loan

75% chance of happening

Arsenal hasn’t wasted any time trying to find a replacement for Mesut Özil. Mikel Arteta has identified Martin Ødegaard, another out of favor playmaker from Real Madrid (just like Özil) & is trying to bring him on loan. I don’t watch Spanish football but I’ve heard great things about Ødegaard & know he was great at Real Sociedad last season.

I’m confused by this move & I don’t think Arsenal need an attacking midfielder in this window. Emile Smith Rowe has emerged as a real talent plus Willian & Nicolas Pépé are on big wages. Arteta needs a better DMF than Mohamed Elneny or Granit Xhaka.

Aston Villa on the verge of signing Sanson

99% chance of happening

Reports are circulating that Aston Villa has agreed an $18 million deal with Olympique de Marseille for Morgan Sanson. Dean Smith confirmed the club are close to signing a player but didn’t give details.

Liverpool & Spurs are interested in Nicolò Barella

1% chance of happening

Unless Liverpool & Tottenham stump up a massive transfer fee there’s no way Inter Milan are selling Nicolò Barella. When you include the loan fee the Nezzazzuri paid him the total outlay to sign him comes to around $40 million. He’s tied down until the Summer of 2024 & just starred in their 2-0 victory over Juventus with a goal & an assist.

This rumor is purely column inches reacting to his big game performance at the weekend.

Brandon Williams wants Newcastle loan move

95% chance of happening

It has been reported that Brandon Williams wants to join Newcastle on loan for the remainder of the season. I think there’s a strong chance this one will happen. Steve Bruce has the Manchester United connection. The arrival of Alex Telles & Luke Shaw’s form has restricted Williams to 3 starts & 3 substitute appearances this season. The move will go through soon as long as neither one of them pick up a long-term injury soon.

Sam Allardyce is keen on Joshua King

10% chance of happening

Joshua King’s contract expires this summer & Bournemouth is keen on getting some money for him. Sam Allardyce is interested “if the price is within our range”. King was linked with a return to Manchester United last January but the deal fell through & they turned to Odion Ighalo. There is speculation Everton are interested in a swap deal with Jonjoe Kenny & Jarrad Braithwaite going the other way.

I can’t see King going to West Brom unless he has a very advantageous relegation release clause inserted in his contract. There are much better & high profile clubs interested in his services. I think he will see out his contract & move in the Summer.

Arsenal have been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt

25% chance of happening

On his day Brandt can be devastating, but, they have been few & far between this last year. He has really lacked consistency & a change would do him good. However, I don’t think North London will be his next club. The emergence of Emile Smith Rowe in the last two weeks will cool Mikel Arteta’s interest.

Ronald Koeman remains hopeful Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum will join him at Barcelona

10% chance of happening

Koeman’s on borrowed time at Barcelona & I don’t see him lasting beyond this season. I think Wijnaldum will leave Liverpool in the summer, but, won’t make his decision till he has a clearer picture. The Dutch international has achieved everything he can at Liverpool & will be looking for a new challenge.

Manchester City’s Eric Garcia has agreed to personal terms with Barcelona & will join this summer when his contract expires. Possibility he could move this window

50% chance of happening this window

John Stones return to form & Nathan Aké has pushed Garcia down the pecking order, to 5th choice Center Back. City can get by without him & will want to get a fee, rather than losing him for free in the summer. It makes sense for all parties, that this move happens in January & in previous seasons it would. Barcelona has serious financial issues & I can see them waiting till the summer.

Sami Khedira recently said, “The Premier League is still missing in my collection, to play there would be the icing on the cake,”. Tottenham & Everton are leading the race

95% chance of happening

The World Cup winner played for José Mourinho & Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. He is desperate to play football after being frozen out by Andrea Pirlo at Juventus. I think Spurs would only be interested in a 6-month loan deal. I don’t see him getting many opportunities with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Moussa Sissoko & Harry Winks ahead of him. Reports indicate Everton are leading the race with an 18-month deal.

PSG want Dele Alli on loan

20% chance of happening

There was talk of this move happening before Mauricio Pochettino took over PSG. Alli needs minutes & a return to form for Gareth Southgate to take him to the Euro’s. Linking back up with Poch & playing with Neymar, Kylian Mbappé & Co is too good to turn down. The only person standing in his way is José Mourinho who doesn’t care about Alli’s England aspirations. He’s solely focused on Tottenham’s success & will want to keep him as an option just in case.

Manchester United are interested in Norwich City’s Max Arons

5% chance of happening

Norwich’s board prioritized financial safety over survival last season to keep their squad together. The Canaries are top of the Championship & on course to return to the Premier League. The only way Ed Woodward signs Arons is by paying over the odds & I don’t see that happening. It’s more likely this deal will happen in the summer.

Wolves are in the market for a backup to Raúl Jiménez & interested in free agent Diego Costa

80% chance of happening

At 32 years old, Costa is past his best & the main reason Atlético Madrid agreed to terminate his contract. He wants playing time & Wolves can offer him that. They need an experienced player to lead their line & provide a focal point. Club & player are a perfect fit for each other.
