Premier League Matchday 17 Betting Tips

Posted By Alex Blowers on December 31, 2020

I don’t want to spend too much time talking about Matchday 15. All four bets failed to hit, totaling a 6 Unit loss:

  • Chelsea choked against Arsenal’s youth team
  • Timo Werner had a day to forget & was hauled off at halftime
  • Tottenham conceded an equalizer in the 86th minute
  • Everton only won by a Goal

Matchday 16 was also a bad round of games. Everton VS Manchester City was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak in City’s squad. Newcastle held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw with Mo Salah missing a couple of guilt edged chances.

My only bet that hit, over the Christmas period was Leeds United Money Line against West Brom. Marcelo Bielsa was bashed for losing 6-2 to Manchester United. Some pundits claimed his playing style was unsustainable & called for him to change to a “Park the Bus”, Sam Allardyce, 10 men behind the ball, tough to beat approach. Two wins later & they are on 23 points. 12 points off the relegation zone & 10 points behind leaders Liverpool. El Loco’s 5-0 destruction of Big Sam felt like a big two fingers to the haters.

This game looks like it is going ahead after Manchester City returned no new positive COVID-19 cases in their latest round of testing. More testing will take place in the coming days, to ensure they have halted the spread. Kyle Walker & Gabriel Jesus are still self-isolating & reports indicate three other players have tested positive.

City are starting to find their form with 4 wins & 2 draws in their last 6 games in the Premier League. A win here & a win against Manchester United in their next fixture will put them right back in this title race. They have been criticized for their lack of goals this season, but, Sergio Aguero is nearing full fitness to solve that problem.

Chelsea’s players responded to Frank Lampard’s criticism with an improved performance against Aston Villa. They took the lead through Olivier Giroud & could have taken all 3 points if N’Golo KantĂ© picked up Anwar El Ghazi instead of ball watching.

The extra rest & Aguero returning from injury will get Pep Guardiola’s side the 3 points here.

Prediction – 1 Unit: Manchester City -1.5 Goals +340

Marcus Rashford’s 93rd minute winner against Wolves took a very fortunate deflection. Manchester United have crept up to 2nd & are 3 points behind leaders Liverpool with a game in hand. I still don’t consider them title contenders & if Ole Gunnar Solksjaer somehow leads this side to the title, I’ll give $100 to a charity of Chops’ choice.

I have watched Aston Villa play 4 or 5 times this seasons & enjoyed every game. They are such an exciting side to watch & their front four is in great form. Ollie Watkins, Jack Grealish, Bertrand Traoré & El Ghazi compliment each other really well. Douglas Luiz & John McGinn in the center of midfield provide energy & do a great job of screening the back four. Matty Cash has been excellent at RB & is looking like he could be one of the signings of the season. Emiliano Martinez is flourishing in goal & Arsenal fans must be wandering if sticking with Bernd Leno was the right choice.

Manchester United’s luck has to run out soon & their home form has let them down this season so far. I’m backing Dean Smith’s side to get something at Old Trafford.

Prediction – 2 Units: Aston Villa or the Draw +117

Sam Allardyce is well aware his West Brom squad isn’t up to scratch. It looks like he’ll be busy in the January Transfer Window as he looks to get experience in. Big Sam was all for the 2 week COVID break in the post match interview against Leeds. He would love two weeks on the training pitch uninterrupted.

Two wins in a row & Arsenal are 9 points off the Top 4. It’s highly unlikely they’ll qualify for the Champions League, but, it has to be the goal they continue working towards. Mikel Arteta has struck gold with Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe & Gabriel Martinelli playing in a three behind Alexander Lacazette or Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang. Saka was their best player in the 1-0 win over Brighton & forced off with an ankle injury in the 81st minute. Early reports indicate it isn’t too bad & he’ll be back in no time.

West Brom have conceded 35 goals, the most in the league & Allardyce’s focus right now will be shoring up the defense. Arsenal will control this game & grind out a 1-0 or 2-0 win.

Prediction – 2 Units: Arsenal to Win to Nil +175
