The Premier League claims another managerial casualty.
CHELSEA TURN TO TUCHEL
Thomas Tuchel is the latest managerial superstar to grace the league. The German manager is renowned for his tactical acumen & replaces Frank Lampard at Chelsea on an 18-month deal with an option to extend. I feel he’s a great acquisition by the Board and brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. He has over 20 years of management experience, worked with some of the world’s best in Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang, and Jadon Sancho, won trophies in Germany and France & reached the Champions League Final.
He already knows Christian Pulišić and Thiago Silva after working with them at Borussia Dortmund and PSG, respectively. One of Lampard’s biggest failings was that he never knew what to do with Kai Havertz or how to get the best out of him. Chelsea has invested a significant amount of money into him and Timo Werner. I’m sure Tuchel has been given the job under the condition he gets the best out of these two.
Because of this, I think he will play a 4-2-3-1 and go with the following eleven.
Havertz and Werner both played in this formation and these positions at their former clubs. Havertz’s best position is still unknown. He operated across the front 4 for Bayer Leverkusen last season. When the Bundesliga restarted in May, he scored braces in the opening two games operating in the Number 9 position. Tuchel has worked with Sancho, Ousmane Dembélé & Mbappé, so he knows how to nurture young attacking talent.
Werner is a brilliant footballer who’s best when playing on the defender’s last shoulder and can use his pace and movement to get in behind. Jorginho’s biggest strength is his eye for a pass. He’s one of the best at spotting teammates in space and would excel in releasing Werner, Hakim Ziyech, and Christian Pulišić from deep.
N’Golo Kanté needs to go back to sitting at the base of the midfield & breaking up play. The back four pretty much picks itself. The only change I would make is to bring Antonio Rüdiger in who I rate over Kurt Zouma.
I’m very likely completely wrong here, and Tuchel will develop a much more innovative way to get the best out of this highly talented squad.
WHERE DOES LAMPARD GO FROM HERE?
Lampard achieved a lot in his 30-month managerial career, taking Derby County to the Playoff Final, which they lost to Aston Villa 2-1. With Chelsea, he won Manager of the Month in October 2019, made the Top 4, reached the FA Cup Final, and tested himself in the Champions League. He’s out of work, and it isn’t easy to see where he goes next.
None of the other elite clubs will give him a chance. Everton, West Ham, Leicester City, Aston Villa, Southampton, Leeds United, Wolves, and Brighton don’t look like they will be changing their manager any time soon. West Brom played their card with Sam Allardyce, and Sheffield United is done for. Filling Sean Dyche’s shoes at Burnley will be as difficult as succeeding Alex Ferguson at Manchester Untied & Arséne Wenger at Arsenal.
This leaves 3 clubs. Steve Bruce is under tremendous pressure at Newcastle, and the fans want him out. The Magpies are a massive club, but the current situation calls for an experienced manager who knows how to win a relegation battle. Scott Parker is doing a great job at Fulham, and I don’t see the benefit of bringing Lampard in, who has little to no experience at this end of the table.
We’re left with Crystal Palace. Roy Hodgson is doing an excellent job keeping them in the league, but at 73-years-old you have to wonder how long he has left in the tank. Their squad is decent, and the majority are 30-years-old or under, so there’s no need for an overhaul. We all know football can change quickly, but Palace is looking his best option if he wants to stay in the Premier League.
The other option and the one I think is best is for him is to move to a different league. Lampard’s in a similar situation to Brendan Rodgers when he was let go by Liverpool back in 2015. With limited options in the Premier League, he took the Celtic job, which fortunately could be available very soon. Neil Lennon is under pressure at Celtic Park after falling 23 points behind Rangers. & for how he handled the Dubai winter training camp controversy. Sports Books made Lampard the 3rd favorite to take over as soon as the news of his Chelsea sacking broke.
It would be a massive boost for the Scottish Premier League, and who wouldn’t love to see Lampard going head to head with Steven Gerrard in the Old Firm derby?.
Frank Lampard is one of the favourites to replace Neil Lennon as Celtic managerhttps://t.co/YKGQYtJ4o7— talkSPORT (@talkSPORT) January 26, 2021
