Assuming UEFA upholds its ban on Manchester City for FFP violations, whoever finishes 5th in the EPL will get the final UCL spot. Right now, that’s Manchester United. They sit at 42 points, ahead of Wolves on goal differential. However, Tottenham (40 points, +7 gd) and Sheffield United (40 points, +4 gd) are also legitimate contenders for that final spot.
This weekend’s matches are critical for positioning. Let’s take a look.

Odds & Ends
- The marquee match-up is without a doubt the Manchester derby (read our Manchester United vs Manchester City preview). A Man U win puts them in the driver’s seat for the final Champions League spot as well as helps inch Liverpool closer to the Premier League title. Expect a spirited performance from the Red Devils as they cling to a 1-1 draw.
- Burnley are even odds with Spurs. That’s crazy. Yeah, Burnley are only 2 points off Spurs with 38 points. And they’re at home. And Spurs are missing Son and Kane. So actually, that makes some sense. Look for another 1-1 draw.
- If Wolves and Sheffield are really going to be contenders for that final UCL spot, they need to take care of business against Brighton and Norwich, respectively. Expect they both will do so, each by a 2-1 scoreline.
- And Liverpool will get back to winning–brushing off Bournemouth at home.
