Premier League Matchday 30 Betting Tips: Arsenal vs Liverpool

Posted By Alex Blowers on April 2, 2021

I’m pretty sure Matchday 29 was my best weekend of the season.

I finished in 8.46 Units of profit with 4 of my 5 bets hitting. Brighton dominated a clueless and disinterested Newcastle side to win comfortably 3-0. Tottenham bounced back from their Europa League disappointment with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa, and Harry Kane got on the scoresheet.

I am now 1.908 Units in the green, and I’m hopeful I can build on this to finish this season with a healthy profit.

These two ended last season on such a high. For the first time in their history, Liverpool won the Premier League, and Arsenal lifted the FA Cup, their first piece of significant silverware since Arsène Wenger left the club. Those accomplishments breathed optimism into both teams. Finishing in the Top 4 would have been the minimum expectation for both at the start of this season.

Unfortunately, it looks like there won’t be any Champions League football for both next season unless Liverpool wins this year’s competition. If either side qualifies for Europe, it will most likely be for the inaugural Europa Conference League (ECL). UEFA’s third-tier competition has been brought in to give clubs from lower-ranked member countries a chance of progressing to the latter stages of a European competition.

I’ll remain open-minded about the ECL, but it’s difficult to see beyond this simply being a worse version of the Europa League. A competition seen by the big sides as a burden who have to navigate the meaningless Group games on Thursday evenings with no one really taking an interest till the Quarter / Semifinal stage. CBS has picked it up in the USA & I’m guessing all the games will be available to stream via the Paramount+ App.

Back to Saturday’s game, Liverpool went into the international break on a mini resurgence with two victories and clean sheets in both. Jurgen Klopp’s decision to start Ozan Kabak and Nathaniel Phillips in the center of defense, along with the return of Fabinho to central midfield, has given them more solidity to their spine.

Arsenal also went into the break on a high after going 3-0 down against West Ham after 32 minutes. Two own goals and an Alexander Lacazette header at the back post rescued a point in an amazing comeback for The Gunners. One of their best players was loan signing Martin Ødegaard, who has just been named their Player of the Month for March. I still find this a bizarre deal and a poor piece of business. With no option to buy, they are essentially developing him for free and raising his transfer value on Real Madrid’s behalf.

Both side’s confidence will be high, but they are in very different stages of their evolution as a team. Mikel Arteta’s side still has a long way to go whilst Klopp’s Liverpool is very much the finished article. For that reason, along with Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe being doubts, I’m backing the away side here.

Put your money behind Liverpool to get the 3 points.

Prediction – 2 Units: Liverpool Money Line +123

For me, this one’s pretty short and simple. Newcastle is in absolute shambles, and I’m still amazed that Steve Bruce is in a job. If you want to read more about my feelings on their situation, check out my Matchday 30 Betting Lines post.

Harry Kane labeled the squad’s attitude and lack of fight and passion as ’embarrassing’ in the games before their much-improved performance against Aston Villa. It’s looking like the defeats to Arsenal in the North London Derby and shock 3-0 defeat to Dynamo Zagreb has been a wake-up call for the whole squad.

Tottenham will beat this hapless Newcastle side very comfortably.

Prediction – 2 Units: Tottenham -1.5 Goals +175 | 2 Units: Tottenham Halftime/Fulltime +140

I’ll also keep this one short. Thomas Tuchel’s decision to switch Chelsea to a back 3 has done wonders for them defensively, conceding 2 goals and keeping 12 clean sheets in 14 games. West Brom is the second-lowest scorers in the league with 20 goals, and Sam Allardyce’s appointment has been a complete failure.

Chelsea will control this game and win comfortably.

Prediction – 2 Units: Chelsea to Win to Nil -132
