After having come up short in last season’s Champions League final, PSG look to get revenge against Bayern Munich and are hungry for a positive result from the Allianz arena in the quarter-finals first leg. They did just that with a thrilling 3-2 win to back home with a crucial lead over the defending champions.
PSG got off to a blistering start by finding the lead in the 3rd-minute itself when Kylian Mbappe’s shot went through Manuel Neuer’s legs. The French side then doubled their lead in the 28th-minute after Marquinhos of all people broke the offside trap before slotting his shot past the Bayern goalkeeper to make it 2-0!
Bayern did get one back soon after, with Eric Choupo-Moting powerfully planting a header into the back of the net in the 37th-minute. The hosts dominated all the possession and got their equalizer in the 60th-minute when Thomas Muller headed in from close range to make it 2-2!
But PSG did not let Bayern complete the comeback, snatching back the lead in the 68th-minute after Kylian Mbappe finished a swift counter-attack with a splendid finish past Neuer. The game itself was an absolute action-packed thriller that stayed true to its reputation, but the French giants go into the second leg as favourites to move onto the semi-finals!
Here are your PSG player ratings vs Bayern Munich.
PSG Player Ratings vs Bayern Munich
Mauricio Pochettino (7.5) –
While many managers prefer to go with a defensive approach at the Allianz Arena, Pochettino decided to take the fight to Bayern. He set up his side perfectly to threaten on the counter-attack with Mbappe & Neymar tormenting the hosts. He also took full advantage of their high defensive line with the first two goals being caused because of this.
He was unlucky to lose some important stars to injury, but Pochettino did well to keep his side motivated enough to be hungry for more goals and play like an entire unit when under pressure. Now has an equally big challenge ahead for next week but Pochettino gots his tactics spot on today.
Keylor Navas (7.5) –
Navas is being forced to stay alert from the get-go because of Bayern’s attacking threat. Comes up with a brilliant reflex save to deny Goretzka’s header from close in the 18th. Then dives smartly to save Pavard’s shot two minutes later. Pulls off another comfortable stop to deny Alaba in the 53rd. Follows that up with a swift diving stop to stop Pavard from scoring in the 54th.
Navas made 10 saves in this game and even though he conceded twice (both which he couldn’t have saved), he ensured that PSG could get the win in the end with all those stops.
Colin Dagba (4.5) –
The young right-back has a huge task today defending against last season’s CL final scorer Kingsley Coman and Lucas Hernandez! But the inexperienced Dagba is really struggling against Coman, being caught out of position and dribbled past too easily repeatedly in the first half. Somewhat improved in the second half, but Coman got the better of him today and Dagba’s attacking threat was non-existent too.
Maquinhos (8.0) –
The PSG captain has to come up big to get a clean sheet today. Makes a clutch block to deny Bayern a goal in the 19th. Almost produces a striker’s finish, brilliantly breaking Bayern’s offside trap before superbly finishing past Neuer.
Just as he was still celebrating his euphoria, he seemingly tweaked his groin and had to go off. Still a brilliant performance in the first half-hour nonetheless.
Presnel Kimpembe (5.5) –
Kimpembe had to assume the role as the defensive leader after Marquinhos’ substitution but couldn’t make the same impact, allowing Bayern to flood the box with crosses and eventually losing the two-goal lead. His passing was pretty impressive but Kimpembe wasn’t able to act like the aggressive leader Pochettino wanted him to do be.
Abdou Diallo (6.5) –
Diallo dealt with Leroy Sane’s threat really well, marking him very strictly in the first half and not letting him do anything threatening. But after a pretty solid half, he had to be subbed for what seems an injury!
Danilo Pereira (6.5) –
Danilo was given the job to protect his backline and became a centre-back after Marquinho’s substitution, but he completely lost track of Choupo-Moting inside the box for his goal. Apart from that, he was actually really solid at the back making 13 (!) clearances and digging PSG out of trouble on numerous occasions to help them secure the narrow win.
Idrissa Gueye (7.0) –
Gueye is acting as PSG’s midfield general today trying his best to break down Bayern’s attacks with his crunching tackles. He was super active in his deeper role, sniffing out Bayern’s attacks and making a lot of clutch interceptions to kick-start counter-attacks. Dealt with Bayern’s intense style really well and used his intelligence well to stop their supply through the middle.
Julian Draxler (5.5) –
Draxler was a bit unlucky to have a goal disallowed in the first half but the smallest of margins after a decent finish. Bit frustrating with his output in the counter-attacks, often getting the final passes wrong and scuffing promising opportunities. Blasted a shot over in the 85th. Worked hard but not efficient enough in attack to impress his coach.
Angel Di Maria (7.0) –
Di Maria had an impressive start to the game and had a role over the opener, sending Neymar through to the final third with a nice ball. After being forced to focus on defensive duties for a long period, he finally found some space to set up Mbappe’s second with a splendid through ball. The Argentine really helped Dagba by working hard defensively and was subbed after a tenacious performance.
Neymar (8.5) –
The Brazilian superstar starts the game brilliantly, sending Mbappe through for his goal with a smart pass. He makes an amazing assist for the second, superbly curling in a perfect cross to set up Marquinhos’ goal. Nearly got a cheeky goal in the 52nd after superbly winning the ball inside Bayern’s half but his shot was well saved.
Neymar created the majority of PSG’s best chances, assisted twice and was a thorn at Bayern’s side with his tricky movement & creative passing all game long.
Kylian Mbappe (9.0) –
Mbappe has an incredible start to the game, cleverly moving into free space inside the box before powering a ball through Neuer. His electric movement and tendency to move into open space tormented Bayern all game long and he produced an even better finish for his second – superbly blasting a ball through Jerome Boateng’s legs to silence Bayern.
After scoring 3 against Barcelona, he gets 2 against Bayern! Mbappe was unstoppable today & his pacy movement, ruthless finishing and exhilarating style were too hot to handle for the opposition side.
Ander Herrera (7.0) –
Herrera has helped stabilize things in midfield for PSG after coming on and is pressing down Bayern’s players really strongly. Added an extra defensive layer for his side, helped out his defenders and ensured a slender win for his side.
Mitchel Bakker (6.5) –
Bakker took over from Diallo and continued his good work on the left, keeping Sane quiet and making some clutch challenges to keep Bayern at bay.
Moise Kean (N/R) –
Kean was isolated on the right after coming on and found himself tracking back for the majority of his appearance.
Rafael Alcantara (N/R) –
The Spaniard was unable to match Neymar’s influence and only ensured that his side were able to sustain the late pressure from Bayern.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Mbappe was nearly unplayable today and scored two superb goals to give his side the win. While Neymar was also extremely dangerous, I’ll give this one to Mbappe because of his ability to get two important goals in such a big game.
