PSG Player Ratings vs RB Leipzig (October 19, 2021)

Written By Uttiyo Sarkar on October 19, 2021

PSG soared to the top of Group A in the Champions League with a gritty victory bottom-placed side RB Leipzig. The Ligue 1 giants came down from a losing position to secure a 3-2 win – thanks to some special stuff from Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe!

The Parisians took control of the game early on, scoring the opener in the 9th minute when Mbappe emphatically finished off a blistering counter-attack.

But RB Leipzig kept posing questions and got their equalizer in the 28th minute – with Andre Silva smartly finishing off a swift move to make it 1-1! PSG dominated 72% of the possession in the first half, but Leipzig created the lion’s share of chances – with Keylor Navas keeping the hosts in the game.

Leipzig continued their good work in the second half and took a stunning lead in the 57th minute, when Nordi Mukiele caught the PSG defence napping and produced an emphatic finish to make it 2-1!

But Messi helped bring things level in the 67th minute – thanks to some help from Mbappe – setting up a grand slam finish to the game. PSG completed the turnaround in the 75th thanks to a sublime ‘panenka’ penalty from Messi.

Messi had the chance to complete a hattrick in added time via a penalty – but gave it away to Mbappe….who missed. That didn’t impact the result, however. Mauricio Pochettino’s side were far from their best & had to work hard – but showed impressive character to get a comeback win that takes them to the top of the group!

Here are your PSG player ratings vs RB Leipzig.

PSG Player Ratings vs RB Leipzig

Manager

Mauricio Pochettino (6.0) –

Pochettino seemingly wanted to make a statement by having his side dominate proceedings from the get-go. But trying to pour too many bodies forward caused trouble as Leipzig launched furious counter-attacks that left his side in tatters. His side was outplayed in the first half and looked all over the place at the back.

Improved their shape in the second half, especially with clever substitutions. Did really well to keep them motivated to complete the turnaround after falling behind and win the game. His tactics weren’t spot on, but a big result for Pochettino & co – especially considering they were without some key player in it.

Goalkeeper

Keylor Navas (7.5) –

Navas replaces Donnarumma today and is called into action early on, making a brilliant save to deny a 3rd-minute goal for Leipzig. Comes up with another sharp save to deny Andre Silva four minutes later. Couldn’t really do much to deny Leipzig’s goals, but his clutch save kept PSG in the game well enough to help them get the comeback win.

Defense

Achraf Hakimi (7.0) –

Hakimi’s thriving in an attack-minded role today, bursting forward and sending in some inviting crosses. Caught out of possession horribly during the equalizer. Did well to press the Leipzig player to give the ball away to Mbappe before Messi’s goal. Probably the best PSG defender on the day – being defensively solid and also contributing well going forward.

Marquinhos (6.0) –

The PSG captain is trying his best to hold down his defensive fort and makes a clutch clearance in the 25th minute to deny a potential goal. Comes up with a decisive block to deny Leipzig a goal in the 43rd. Played Mukiele completely onside for his goal. Looked a bit shaky against Leipzig’s blistering attacks, but worked hard to save PSG on multiple occasions.

Presnel Kimpembe (4.5) –

Kimpembe lost complete track of Silva and let him go past him too easily for his equalizer. Lets Christopher N’kunku go past him too easily in the 42nd, but luckily his shot went wide. Allowed Mukiele to move past him too easily before scoring his goal. His passing might’ve been decent, but another error-prone performance from the French defender.

Nuno Mendes (6.5) –

Mendes is an adventurous figure on the left, making some smart forward runs to cause problems. A really lively figure down the left-wing in carrying the ball forward and also dug his feet in to help ruin a lot of Leipzig’s attacking moves down his side.

Midfielders

Marco Veratti (8.0) –

Veratti is bossing things around in midfield, moving the ball forward efficiently and helping his side dominate the possession. The Italian midfielder oozed class in midfield, winning 11 duels, maintaining 89% passing accuracy and making 5 clearances.

Kept things ticking in midfield even when things got difficult, moved the ball forward efficiently and worked hard defensively to help his side regain possession. A complete performance from PSG’s midfield general.

Ander Herrera (5.5) –

Herrera’s acting like PSG’s midfield engine, covering a lot of ground to contribute on both ends of the pitch. Moved the ball around the pitch well, but lacked any impact when it came to creating goals and was taken off after PSG fell behind.

Idrissa Gueye (4.5) –

Gueye doesn’t seem to be the bullish figure he normally is in midfield. Struggling when it comes to dealing with Leipzig’s counter-attacks. Made too many fouls, was dispossessed on many occasions and didn’t look comfortable dealing with Leipzig’s quick style at all, getting booked too. Taken off at the hour-mark.

Forwards

Lionel Messi (9.0) –

Messi looks to be in the mood to cause chaos. Kept isolated in the first half but his attempted curler in the 44th was deflected wide. Produces a rather scrappy finish to net his second goal in consecutive UCL games for PSG. And then showcases his class with a cheeky, delightful penalty to put his side ahead.

Good guy Messi allowed Mbappe to take the late penalty…..only to see him missed it. Sacrificed his penalty too. But that doesn’t shadow the fact that Messi was just too good for Leipzig. Seems to be finding his rhythm at PSG with these passing UCL games.

Julian Draxler (7.0) –

Filling in for Neymar, Draxler nearly scored a fantastic acrobatic strike in the 6th, but saw his surprise shot go over. Played Mbappe through on goal for his opener. Worked hard to cover a lot of ground, contributing on both ends of the pitch – doing decent defensive work and also efficiently moving the ball forward.

Kylian Mbappe (8.5) –

Mbappe has a fiery start to the game, finishing off an electric counter-attack with a bombastic shot through a defender’s leg. Being marked tightly, but still got in some great areas in the first half. Brilliant took the ball forward before efficiently setting up Messi’s goal. Did really well to earn the penalty in the 73th by drawing a clever foul inside the box.

After a brilliant performance, Mbappe skies a penalty into the rafters late on. Ruined Messi’s hattrick chance too! Despite that, Mbappe was just too hot to handle for Leipzig and continues his impressive start to the season.

Substitutions

Danilo Pereira (6.0) –

Pereira did a really good job to help protect his backline better than Gueye did. Worked hard to close down spaces & won some key duels to help PSG get the job done.

Gini Wijnaldum (6.0) –

Wijnaldum added a lot of positive energy into midfield, stopping the Leipzig from having too much freedom in midfield & getting the ball forward quickly to keep the visitors on the back foot.

Thilo Kehrer (N/R) –

Did really well to help win the second penalty for his side…which Mbappe missed.

MAN OF THE MATCH

It took some time, but Messi magic lit up the Parc des Princes today. He created chances and scored twice – including a memorable penalty. Leo gets the MOTM for today’s heroics.
