Just as quickly as it came, the Super League has left us.

Given player and fan reaction, good riddance.

The demise of the Super League

Tuesday was like an avalanche of shit reigning down on the Super League. Manchester City were the first major club to announce they were out. Chelsea followed. So did Manchester United (along with the resignation of their much-maligned CEO, Ed Woodward).

Eventually, all six Premier League founding members withdrew from participating in the league.

Jurgen Klopp, rumored to be fuming over FSG just dumping this on him, found support from his squad. Every single Liverpool player posted the following message on their social account:

Super League founding clubs look like an utter joke

Make no mistake, the owners of the 12 founding Super League clubs look like bumbling fucking idiots.

Their failure to read the room, consult with managers and players, or even grasp the basic concepts of why there would be backlash is astounding.

Sure, different clubs wanted in for different reasons. Barcelona is broke. Real Madrid are reeling. American owners want American sports economics. Etc.

At the end of the day, credit to football fans across Europe. They are the end consumer. They made their voices heard. And they rejected a concept that would’ve altered the landscape of the sport they love.
