Serie A Betting 21/22: Matchday 02 Lines and Tips

Written By Alex Blowers on August 24, 2021

Serie A kicked off last weekend with fans allowed back in the stadium, and their presence helped inspire four of the sides to home wins. The other six games resulted in four away victories and two draws. Across those 10 fixtures, we saw 36 goals scored by 17 teams. The three teams who failed to get on the scoresheet were Genoa, Sampdoria, and Venezia. The most surprising stat of the weekend was seven players got sent off across four games.

Matchday 02 promises to be just as good, with the standout fixture between Juventus and Empoli at Allianz Stadium on Sunday. Wojciech Szczęsny will want this game to come quickly after his horror show against Udinese in Matchday 01. The Polish goalkeeper made two horrible mistakes that led to goals and allowed Udinese to tie the game up at 2-2.

Juve thought Cristiano Ronaldo had won them the game deep into stoppage time. Federico Chiesa delivered a delicious ball for CR7, who outjumped his marker and powered the ball into the back of the net. Ronaldo celebrated wildly, removing his shirt only to have his goal ruled out by VAR for offside.

STADIO OLIMPICO STANDS FOR TAMMY ABRAHAM

Tammy Abraham received a standing ovation from AS Roma‘s fans for his man-of-the-match debut performance. The former Chelsea striker was a constant threat with his pace in behind and was brought down in the 17th minute by Bartlomiej Dragowski, which earned the goalkeeper a red card. He went on to provide two assists and hit the bar as his new club beat Fiorentina 3-1 in their opening Serie A game.

His new manager José Mourinho was also making his debut at the Stadio Olimpico. This victory meant he is now the fastest manager to reach 50 Serie A wins (77 games), 50 Premier League wins (63 games), and 50 La Liga wins (62 games).

INTER MILAN KICK-OFF TITLE DEFENSE IN STYLE

Ever since Antonio Conte, Romelu Lukaku, Achraf Hakimi, Ashley Young, and Radja Nainggolan left this summer, I’ve had big doubts over Inter Milan‘s chances of retaining their Serie A title.

Their strongest eleven isn’t as good as last season’s, but they have the same back three and goalkeeper who were the best defense in the league, conceding 35 goals. New manager Simone Inzaghi can use that as the foundation for their title challenge.

The Nerazzurri kicked off their title defense against Genoa at the San Siro and bossed the game from start to finish winning 4-0. The star of the show was former AC Milan player Hakan Çalhanoglu who assisted Milan Škriniar‘s opener and smashed a rocket into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Inzaghi still has Lautaro Martínez (Suspended) and Alexis Sánchez (Calf) to come into the starting eleven. If he can integrate them into the team and get them firing, they have a good chance of competing for the Scudetto.

SERIE A BETTING: ODDS & ENDS

  • With home advantage, I like Juventus to Win By Shutout at +105.
  • I’m going to back Roma again on the spread -1.5 Goals at +165 for their game against Salernitana. Mourinho’s side should have enough to win this game comfortably.
  • I recommend also backing Lazio on the spread -1.5 Goals at +130. Maurizio Sarri‘s decision to switch them from a 3-5-2 to a 4-3-3 will serve them well this season.
