UEFA Champions League Betting 21/22: Atlético Madrid vs Liverpool Betting Preview

Written By Alex Blowers on October 17, 2021

The UEFA Champions League returns this week for Matchday 03, and the standout fixture is between Atlético Madrid and Liverpool.

These two sides occupy first and second in Group B, which many referred to as the ‘Group of Death’ when the draw was made in late August. A win for Liverpool will put them in an excellent position to progress to the knockout stages.

UEFA Champions League Betting: Atlético Madrid vs Liverpool Preview

Out: Matheus Cunha (Muscle)
Doubtful: José María Giménez (Abductor), Marcus Llorente (Hamstring)
Suspended: None
Coach: Diego Simeone

I think Diego Simeone will revert to a 3-5-2 formation after choosing a 4-4-2 against AC Milan in the previous Matchday. Liverpool’s front three are at their best when they have space to run into, and he will instruct his backline to sit deep.

Geoffrey Kondogbia will complete the midfield three alongside Koke and Rodrigo de Paul. He has been one of Atlético’s best players in the opening games of the season and was suspended for the 2-0 win over Barcelona after picking five yellow cards in LaLiga.

If José María Giménez isn’t fit enough to start in central defense, Felipe will come in.

I think Simeone has to go with Antoine Griezmann over João Felix up top. I don’t see Atlético seeing much of the ball, and the World Cup winner’s energy, pressing, and work rate will be essential for putting pressure on Liverpool’s backline.

UEFA Champions League Betting: Atlético Madrid vs Liverpool Preview

Out: Harvey Elliot (Ankle), Curtis Jones (Muscle)
Doubtful: Thiago Alcântara (Calf)
Suspended: None
Coach: Jurgen Klopp

Alisson Becker and Fabinho will return to the starting lineup fully rested. Liverpool decided to fly the pair directly to Madrid to prepare for this game after representing Brazil on Thursday.

It was a case of right place right time for Roberto Firmino in Saturday’s 5-0 win, with the Brazilian grabbing his second hat-trick in the Premier League. All three goals came from tap ins, and it will be enough to keep his spot in the starting lineup ahead of Diogo Jota.

James Milner should continue in central midfield after a solid performance and an assist against Watford. If Jurgen Klopp decides to rest him, Naby Keita or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will come in for the veteran.

Trent Alexander-Arnold returned at the weekend from the muscle injury that kept him out of the 2-2 draw with Manchester City. The England international completed 64 minutes, and with Atlético playing so deep, his crossing will play a key role in breaking them down.

Harvey Elliott is unavailable after aggravating a groin injury while on international duty with England Under 21’s. Klopp was furious about it in Friday’s press conference, saying, “Who were the opponents? Andorra? Great. Very important that he played there.”

Curtis Jones is a long-term absentee, and if Thiago Alcantara makes the squad, it will be on the bench.

ATLÉTICO MADRID VS LIVERPOOL UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BETTING TIPS

Atlético come into this game fully rested after their game against Getafe was postponed by LaLiga. The South American international sides are playing their final World Cup 2022 qualifiers on a Thursday, meaning some players cannot get back in time for the weekend league fixtures.

This does give Simeone’s team an advantage as they’ve had more days on the training pitch to prepare. They will adopt their usual deep defensive style to make things difficult for this in form Liverpool side, who are back to their attacking best.

Klopp’s side have scored 18 goals in their last five games, and 12 have come in the second half. My bet recommendation is to back Liverpool to score after half-time.
