UEFA Champions League Betting 21/22: Inter vs Liverpool Betting Preview

Written By Alex Blowers on February 15, 2022

The UEFA Champions League returns this week for the Last 16, and for me, the match of the round is Inter vs. Liverpool. Both sides are in a good moment, sitting second in their domestic leagues. The game is being held at the San Siro and the host’s first appearance in the Knockout Stage for a decade.

The game is scheduled to kick off Wednesday at 3 PM EST and will be shown live on CBS.

UEFA Champions League Betting: Inter vs Liverpool Betting Preview

Out: Robin Gosens (Thigh), Joaquin Correa (Thigh),
Doubtful: None
Suspended: Nicoló Barella
Coach: Simone Inzaghi

Arturo Vidal is set to replace Nicoló Barella in the starting lineup whose absence will be sorely missed. The Euro 2020 winner was sent off for pushing Éder Militão in their final group game and is unavailable for the second leg also after UEFA handed him a two-match suspension.

Alessandro Bastoni was suspended for Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Napoli and will return to the starting lineup fully rested. Part of Inter’s success this season and last has been built off his defensive partnerships with Stefan de Vrij and Milan Škriniar.

The club are hopeful January signing Robin Gosens will return at the end of the month and be available for the second leg. Ivan Perišić has been outstanding at left wing-back contributing five goals and one assist this season.

I would trust Matteo Darmian on the opposite flank due to his four years of Premier League experience with Manchester United. Don’t be surprised if Denzel Dumfries gets the nod.

Up top, Edin Džeko will drift between the lines and provide a focal point. Lautaro Martínez will be hoping his Group form doesn’t follow him to the Knockout Stage after failing a single goal or assist.

UEFA Champions League Betting: Inter vs Liverpool Betting Preview

Out: None
Doubtful: None

Coach: Jürgen Klopp

In this day and age, it’s rare for a club of Liverpool’s size to have no injury concerns.

Thiago Alcântara is the perfect midfielder for these European nights. His ability to dictate the tempo and retain possession is essential for taking control of these ties and imposing yourself on the opposition. He will start in midfield alongside Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

Diogo Jota flourished on the wing while Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané were away at the Africa Cup of Nations. Klopp will move him back into the center at Roberto Firmino‘s expense. January signing Luis Díaz has impressed and could feature from the bench at some point.

The back four picks itself. There’s a slight chance Ibrahima Konaté is selected ahead of Joël Matip for his pace.

If you read my UCL Last 16 Lines post or listened to the latest High Press Pod, you will know my initial advice is to avoid this game.

In Inter’s last 30 home games at the San Siro, they’ve only lost three and conceded 55 goals in their previous 62 Serie A matches. There’s value in backing Simone Inzaghi‘s side with home advantage to get something from this game. I’m going to take Inter in the Double Chance market at -125. I think that’s a good price for having two of the three possible outcomes covered.

BETTING TIP: Inter to Win or Draw -125
